07/13/2016 - College PREP - Washington, DC Kalen showed as a RHP and for the first time as a catcher at the event. He continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. Behind the plate, pop times showed in the 2.10 range with accuracy on his throws. Feet are active working in line through a clean transfer and exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Receiving and blocking skills show as quality tools as he continues to develop and get more reps. At the plate, hitting and power potential has improved through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will continue to improve as he works to utilize his lower half more aggressively. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 73 mph. Breaking ball displays 12/6 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. Getting on a long toss program to develop more arm strength will aid in improving abilities on the mound. With 2 years to further develop, Kalen has a lot of potential with time and room to continue to progress his game.
