Official Scouting Report

  • C/RHPPosition Projection

07/13/2016 - College PREP - Washington, DC Kalen showed as a RHP and for the first time as a catcher at the event. He continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. Behind the plate, pop times showed in the 2.10 range with accuracy on his throws. Feet are active working in line through a clean transfer and exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Receiving and blocking skills show as quality tools as he continues to develop and get more reps. At the plate, hitting and power potential has improved through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will continue to improve as he works to utilize his lower half more aggressively. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 73 mph. Breaking ball displays 12/6 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. Getting on a long toss program to develop more arm strength will aid in improving abilities on the mound. With 2 years to further develop, Kalen has a lot of potential with time and room to continue to progress his game.

09/13/2014 - Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend (Ages 14-18) Commuter Kalen is a strong, young hitter with potential to hit the baseball with power. He displays a square setup at the plate with an activated load. Kalen also shows the ability to use his entire body during the swing, letting the upper half and lower half work as one piece. Kalen needs to continue to improve his launch and getting to a strong hitting position on time, he also needs to continue improve his swing path and keeping the barrel in the hitting zone longer.

08/14/2014 - Interactive Video Program - Trenton, NJ Kalen is a 2-way player who is a RHP/3B. On the mound, he throws a FB & CB from a 3/4 arm slot. He uses his lower 1/2 well and drives off the rubber. He has a repeatable delivery and throws strikes. FB ranges from 68-71 mph while breaking ball has 11/5 shape. At 3B, he maintains good body control in his approach to the ground ball. He fields the ball cleanly and makes accurate throws across the diamond. With the bat, this RHH has an aggressive approach with good balance. Barrel delivery is level as he hits the ball where it's pitched and sprays it to all parts of the field.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
