06/16/2019 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 (Ages 14-18) Karsten continues to show a prospect with improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.07 runner. At the plate, power potential is now well above average through an athletic setup. He has strong/centered balance with fluid rhythm to load. Hands are quick (86 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path with lower half working well through the swing. He has strength in his swing with gap to gap pop. In the OF, he takes a quick first step and moves lightly on the balls of his feet. Range is a plus as reads balls well off the bat and covers a lot of ground. Transfer is smooth with strong throws (89 mph velocity) through his cut off. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 81 mph. Fastball shows good arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

08/01/2018 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Karsten is a big, projectable two-way player who always brings energy to the field and has a high baseball IQ. He shows off his strong arm in the outfield to cut down runners and on the mound with a big fastball. In the field, he shows active feet and is aggressive working to the ball, showing plenty of range. His exchange is clean and he release with momentum to his target to make strong, accurate throws. At the dish, he shows an opposite field approach, staying back on the ball and covering the entire strike zone. He has a strong, balanced lower half to generate a fast bat on a direct path to deliver the barrel to the ball. On the bump, he features a FB/CB mix, getting good action on each pitch. He pounds the zone and mixes his pitches well, able to throw both for strikes in any count to keep hitters off balance. More use of his lower half will help unlock more velocity moving forward. Karsten is an intriguing prospect we expect to continue to improve.

05/26/2018 - College PREP - Salt Lake City, UT Karsten is a tall, solid OF/RHP who has a promising future on the diamond. In the OF, he displays solid defensive abilities and utilizes his quick feet well in his lateral movement as he displays range. He works to get behind balls, playing through with momentum to his target. At the plate he shows a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. Fastball showed a range of 75-76 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but through too hard, resembling fastball. Stock on the mound will continue to increase as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 2 years to further develop, Karsten has potential with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
