Official Scouting Report

  • SSPosition Projection

07/17/2010 - College PREP - Costa Mesa (Los Angeles), CA Keaton is a talented SS that will graduate in 2011. He showed similar skills at Team One West as he did in previous workouts. Defensively, Keaton has quick feet, soft hands, and he fields the ball out in front of his body. He works through the ball well, in a low position, and he has a quick release with good accuracy to his target. Added arm strength will only help Keaton's abilities get even better. Offensively, Keaton is an aggressive hitter, with a good load. He stays inside the baseball, he has good bat speed, and he works the ball gap to gap. Keaton has a short stroke, but he will need to avoid lifting the ball.

09/13/2009 - National Tryout - Azusa, CA Keaton is a lean, athletic middle infielder with life in his arm, good hands, and a mature feel. Hands work out in front and are soft, and he has a very good idea on the backhand. Angles can improve, but he has a good idea and takes an aggressive approach. Hitting grades improved since the last time we saw him. Delivers the barrel and the lower half aggressively to the hitting zone. He does a good job of staying on toptakes a line drive approach. He works to the middle of the field and gets good extension through contact. Shows above average, gap-type power. Good looking athlete with two springs ahead of him. We have seen solid improvement in athletic grades including 2 tenths off of his original 60 yd time and another 5 mph on the radar gun. Looking forward to seeing his progression after this spring.

01/25/2009 - College PREP - La Jolla, CA Keaton is a young SS with a tall, thin frame that does show projection as it continues to physically mature. Foot speed is average and does need to get on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. He utilizes his feet well in his lateral movement, showing range but does sit back on routine ground balls, creating a deep glove action. As he learns to come get and play through ball, it will enable his hands / glove action to work well out front. Arm strength is solid average as he shows the ability to throw from all angles with accuracy. He does need to get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength and carry on throws. At the plate, Jones has near above average ability with solid average power. He loads well, maintains balance, and displays smooth rhythm through his swing. Swing path is long, getting barrel out around the ball, creating a pull type swing. He has potential at the plate and will improve quickly with minor adjustments. With 2 years to further develop, Keaton has the makings to be a solid player at the collegiate level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
