11/13/2016 - College PREP - North Charleston, SC Layton continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. In the MIF, defensive abilities are well above average as he displays smooth / fluid actions. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground. Feet are active / aggressive as he attacks balls and plays through well with his body. Feet are active / aggressive but will benefit by coming to get ball and playing through with his body. Glove action is soft / sure as he presents well out in front. Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with carry on his throws. At the plate, he shows an open / athletic setup. Hands are loose and work through an aggressive swing path. He makes consistent contact and works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. On the mound, fastball showed in the high 70 mph range. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, shows a feel for with plus arm side run, and it shows as a quality pitch. Building more arm strength through a long toss program will aid in further development on the mound. With 2 years to further develop, Layton has lot of potential and will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities, possibly as a two-way guy.

04/10/2016 - National Tryout Plus - Greensboro, NC Layton shows a promising future on the diamond. He continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. On the mound is where he has improved the most. Arm strength is now solid as indicated by his top velocity of 82 mph. Fastball showed a range of 79-82 mph with good arm side run. Breaking ball is a quality pitch, displaying 11/5 shape with tight spin and late breaking action. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Control is outstanding as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a solid runner at 7.34. In the MIF, he shows smooth / fluid actions. Feet are active / aggressive as he attacks balls and moves well laterally. Glove action is clean and he shows good body control. Presenting his glove more out in front will help to avoid getting the ‘in between' hop. At the plate, hitting / power abilities have improved through an open setup. Hands are quick and work inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Swing path is level as he shows a line drive type approach. Power will increase as he works to utilize his lower half more aggressively.

01/17/2014 - Baseball Factory Spring Training at the Yankees Training Complex (Ages 12-14) Layton is a solid young versatile player. He is a good fielder with good hands who backhands well and has a very accurate arm. He hustles to the ball and attacks on defense. He needs to get lower while fielding the ball and get his hands out in front to field more cleanly. As a RHP, Layton has nice level shoulders, throws strikes consistently, and has good arm side run. He can improve on the mound as he uses his lower half more and finishes with his chest over his front side. At the Plate, Layton has a good setup, uses his hands well and swings aggressively. He needs to stay through contact and throw a little more weight toward his center to improve.

11/15/2012 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City Layton Helms is a 2018 graduate who plays 3rd base and also pitches. In the field Layton has sure hands, active footwork, and an athletic fielding position. He is aggressive to the ball and shows good arm strength with his throws across the diamond. At the plate he has an athletic set up, good load, and a short stride. He shows good balance and has average bat speed for his age. He is aggressive in his at bats and is able to make consistent contact. On the mound Layton has a good mound presence and he is consistent with his delivery. He has a good fastball with arm side run and a curve ball with a 10/4 shape. He has a good rhythm and stays in line with his finish. Layton should continue to show improvement with some arm strength and game experience.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
