Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/OFPosition Projection

06/16/2013 - College PREP - Hoover (Birmingham), AL Layton is a tall, solid, 2-way player who plays OF and RHP. In the OF, Layton has active footwork, he takes good angles to the ball, and he fields out front. He makes plays, his exchange is clean, and he throws with accuracy from a long arm action. Not drifting on fly balls and finishing his throws can help OF improve. On the mound, Layton has a long / loose arm action, level shoulders, and he lands in a square position. Not wrapping his back arm action and a better finish can help mound effectiveness improve. At the plate, Layton has an open stance, good balance, and fast bat speed. He makes hard contact, his swing is level, and he gets his lower 1/2 through. If Layton can avoid lunging and let the ball travel deeper, offensive grades can spike.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
