11/08/2019 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition in Arizona (Ages 14-18) Layton continues to show a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At 3B, he displays clean / smooth actions. Feet are active as he displays proper footwork as he works to square ground balls up, presenting hands as he makes the plays. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 68 mph. Fastball showed a range of 66-68 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. Getting on a long toss program to develop more arm strength will aid in improving abilities on the mound. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable.

07/16/2019 - College PREP - Dallas, TX Layton is a lean 3B/RHP who has a promising future on the diamond. At the plate he shows a squared, athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball and shows a feel for the barrel with power showing best to the pull side. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. At 3B, he displays smooth / clean actions. Feet are active and he displays proper footwork but needs to play through balls more with his body. Glove action is clean but needs to present more out front. Range will increase as he improves and he increases foot quickness. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 62-66 mph with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but throws too hard resembling fastball. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 4 years to further develop, Layton has potential with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
