Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/LHPPosition Projection

09/17/2014 - Under Armour Fall Classic, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Layton is an athletic two-way player that really shined in the outfield and at the plate in his latest Baseball Factory outing. Offensively, he showed good rhythm, quick hands, and pull side power. Improving his barrel accuracy and driving the ball to all fields will be important moving forward. Defensively, he was very aggressive in the outfield. He took good routes on fly balls and solid angles on ground balls. On the mound he displayed a two-pitch mix. His fastball was downhill and had good arm side run. His fastball had late life especially when he was down in the zone. His CB has 2/8 break on it and had tight spin. Making sure he keeps the same arm speed with his breaking ball will be important moving forward.

06/10/2014 - 2014 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's Team One Florida Layton is a solid built OF that has good ability on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the lefty was quick with the bat down to contact and made solid contact. He is a strong hitter with good mechanics and promise. He has good leverage and has natural raw power. Defensively, he fields out in front and throws with a clean arm stroke having the ball jump out of his hand. He works behind and through well and will stay in a corner spot at the next level. Overall - Layton has good projection as a L/L corner OF.

04/27/2014 - College PREP - Tampa, FL Layton is a junior OF/LHP that has a good/strong frame at 5'10/190 lbs. In the outfield, he takes good routes to the ball, fielding in front with soft hands. He has a clean exchange and a smooth arm stroke to throw - with good momentum through the target. Offensively, the LHH has an athletic setup and accelerates the barrel through contact with a level path. He is consistent pull side and has some pop. Controlling his lower half and staying compact to the ball will increase pop and plate coverage. On the mound, the southpaw pounds the zone with three pitches - accelerating the arm through his release. He keeps his eyes on the target and hit 78 with his FB. Overall - we see Layton as an OF with good ability in the field and at the dish.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
