07/26/2013 - Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's Team One North Pena continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At the plate, power grades have improved the most, now showing outstanding pop at the plate. He shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed and he has strength on his swing with the baseball exploding off his bat when centered. Pop times where in the 2.20 range with times continuing to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level.

02/24/2013 - College PREP - Long Island, NY Pena shows his willingness to work as he continues to get better. Behind the plate, he gains ground and has a quick/clean exchange, throwing his lowest pop time to date at 2.17. He moves around balls in the dirt, centering and deadening them off of his chest. Offensively, he shows good rhythm and works to get into a solid launch position. He has some pop off of his bat and gets his barrel through the zone quickly. He has power ability and is a middle of the line-up type of guy.

08/01/2012 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 Pena continues to show as a catcher. His feet are active as he works in line to his target through a clean transfer / exchange. Pop times were in the 2.22 range as he needs to build more arm strength, improve foot speed, and work to get rid of the ball quicker to lower times. Receiving / blocking skills are playable but needs further instruction / development to be quality tools at the next level. At the plate, he shows an open, athletic setup. His swing path is level and he keeps the barrel through the ball at contact. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to let ball travel and work to keep his hands inside the ball. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude and works hard.

05/06/2012 - College PREP - Long Island, NY Leandro is a thick and athletic catcher who graduates in 2014. Defensively, he has good flexion, he tracks to ball into his mitt, and is sure handed. He has a clean exchange, getting the ball down to 2nd in as low as 2.22. Pena shows a soft chest, centering and deadening the ball in front. A quicker exchange and increased arm strength will only help to benefit his defensive abilities. Offensively, he displays a tall/open setup, solid load, and short stride. He shows good barrel accuracy and works the middle of the field. Better rhythm/timing and a more level swing will help his hitting abilities improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
