03/06/2011 - College PREP - Plainfield, IN Compared to his last workout, Leighton improved in all aspects of his game including his running time, fielding grade and both hitting grades. Leighton is a tall, thick two-way player that graduates in 2012. Defensively at first base he shows soft hands, good footwork and a good overall feel around the bag. He throws from a 3/4 arm slot and makes accurate throws to second on double-play feeds. At times he fields the ball a bit deep so he needs to continue to work on a wider base which will help him get his glove out front more. At the plate he stands tall with an open stance, shows a good load and has a nice short path to the ball. He is on time with his front foot and has good plate coverage. He needs to continue to work on getting better use of his lower half which is partially anchored. This causes him to hit uphill at times which is why he is inconsistent in squaring the baseball. On the mound stays in line to his target, has a good balance point and keeps his eyes on target throughout the delivery. He needs to continue to build arm strength with a solid long toss program. He also needs a better drive with his lower body to improve on the mound.
