01/15/2010 - Under Armour Preseason All-America - 2010
Luis is a tall, young, athletic player, who will graduate in 2011. He currently projects better at SS than on the hill. At SS, Luis has very good hands and solid footwork. He has a quick transfer, strong arm, and can throw from multiple angles. Luis's hands work well in front of his body, he has effective actions, and he plays low for a big guy. More aggressiveness through the baseball should help Luis continue to make positive strides at SS. On the mound, Luis has good tempo, gets to his balance point and he keeps his eyes on his target well. Luis can improve on the hill with better extension on his pitches, more use of his lower 1/2, and a more consistent release point. At the plate, Luis has a good set up, free actions, and strength in his swing. He has a level swing path and can hit to all fields. More use of his lower 1/2 and letting the ball travel deeper will help hitting and power numbers rise.
10/21/2009 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic - 2009
Torres improved his foot speed as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.60 runner. He showed on the mound for the first time with fastball showing a range of 78-82 mph with cutting action on a downhill plane that creates tough angles on hitters. Changeup is solid average showing a feel for with fading action. He is around the plate with his fastball but needs to be more consistent with his changeup. At the plate, he was 2 for 10 with 2 2B.Currently, he projects best at SS for the next level.
08/23/2009 - College PREP - Farmingville (Long Island), NY
Luis is a young SS with a tall, athletic frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Foot speed is near average and he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active and aggressive in coming to get and playing through ground balls with his feet and hands. Lateral movement is a plus, displaying range. Hands are soft, clean, and smooth displaying a solid glove action in making all the plays. Defensive abilities are near above average in the middle of the IF. Arm strength is near above average as indicated by his top velocity of 85 mph at the arm strength station. His throws display life, carry and accuracy across the diamond. He needs to work on his foot work to throw to improve on getting rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, Torres has solid average abilities and power through a balanced approach. He shows a quiet load with hands working quickly to the baseball, flashing bat speed. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. Swing path is long and uphill with power showing best to the pull side. With 2 years to further develop, Luis has potential to be a solid player at the next level.
