Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHPPosition Projection

10/09/2013 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic Luke only showed as a RHP at the event but continues to show an upside for pitching with a great body for the mound. Delivery is sound / repeatable, allowing his arm action to work quick and free to the plate. Arm strength is well above average as he topped out at 84 mph. Fastball showed a range of 80-84 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with sweeping action. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run. Off speed pitches are quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Command / control are superior as well as he throws strikes with all his pitches to both sides of the plate and changes speeds well. Stock on mound will rise as more arm strength is gained through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he works hard and has a great attitude with a solid mound presence.

06/22/2013 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 Luke worked out both in the OF and on the mound during his time in Omaha. On the mound, FB pounds the zone topping out at 84 mph with run as he attacks hitters. He shows plus command and works both sides of the dish. Luke has a quick arm action, level shoulders, and he lands in a square fielding position. Defensively, Luke attacks the ball aggressively, he takes good routes, and he throws with carry and consistency to his target. He has a clean exchange and strong arm, wanting runners to try and test it. At the plate, Luke has a tall / open stance, a strong bat angle, and a line drive approach. He put the bat on the ball consistently and put pressure on the defense. Luke plays the game hard and gives it his all everyday. Thanks to his abilities on the diamond, Gillihan has a bright future in the game.

06/09/2013 - College PREP - Conway (Little Rock), AR Luke is a RHP that has a tall, broad pitchers frame at 6'5/200 lbs. On the bump, he throws three pitches - touching 83 MPH with run on his fastball, and throwing a change-up with arm side run (68-72). He is long/loose with his arm action, but has a tendency to stiffen up, effecting his command and velo. Gillihan has untapped lower half strength that will increase his velocity. We see Luke as a projectable RHP that has good mechanics and a strong frame.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
