Official Scouting Report

09/04/2020 - HS All-Region Tournament Luke continues to shine on the diamond. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking balls down. He works to get behind balls and plays through with momentum to his target. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. Throws are accurate with carry (82 mph velocity) to his target but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach.

08/02/2020 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Luke is a talented 2-way player (SS/RHP) who worked hard on his skills during his time at Pirate City. At SS, he has active prep with fluid/athletic actions and is aggressive to come and get the GB. Hands are presented out in front as he tracks the bat into a soft mitt and gathers well. Transfer is clean with carry & accuracy on his throws. As a hitter, Luke shows a tall stance with patience waiting for a pitch he likes. He takes a hack on-plane, connects and hits line-drives. Continuing to improve his timing will help to increase hard contact consistency. On the mound, this RHP steps onto the mound looking to attack hitters. He works to a controlled balance point, gets good glove-side lease and drives downhill toward the dish. Arm works loose/free as he moves the ball in and out to both sides of the plate. FB now tops out at 78 mph with good arm-side run. Curveball has 11/5 shape with tight spin, complimenting his FB well. O'Neil is a skilled 2-way prospect who has upside and should find success in this his sophomore year.

11/08/2019 - Baseball Factory's Fall Classic Tournament at Pirate City Luke is a coachable SS/RHP prospect who worked hard on his skills during the Fall Classic at Pirate City. In the field, Luke takes a good first step and shows active footwork. He gets into an athletic position and fields the ball out in front with soft hands. He makes a two-handed exchange and throws from a high 3/4 angle, keeping his throws accurate with carry through his target. Staying low when moving to throw can help Luke improve defensively. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a square stance and takes a controlled stride. He is controlled getting into a small load and drives through well with his lower half. He takes a level swing and produces consistent line drives. Luke can improve as a hitter by continuing to add strength. On the mound, Luke gathers over the rubber and separates his hands on time. He works with a clean arm and extends through his release, finishing with a controlled landing. Luke shows a two pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 70mph with tailing action. Breaking ball sits from 62-64mph with 11-5 break. Long tossing to build up his arm strength can help Luke improve as a pitcher. Overall, Luke is a solid prospect who has the potential to further progress his skills on the field.

10/06/2019 - College PREP - Grapevine (DFW), TX Luke is a lean SS/RHP who has a promising future on the diamond. At the plate is where he shows best through a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. At SS, he displays clean / smooth actions. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls but needs to play through more with his body. Glove action is firm and presents well out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 66-67 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but throws too hard, resembling fastball. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 4 years to further develop, Luke has potential with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
