Official Scouting Report

  • RHP/1BPosition Projection

12/27/2019 - Baseball Factory West Coast Winter Classic (Ages 12-14) Makai is a tall and athletic 2-way prospect that made several adjustments over the week. At 1B, Makai works off the bag well when holding runners and he knows how to position himself on the field. He squares the ball up and has proper footwork when throwing. He needs to continue be on time with his prep step and improve his first step quickness to improve range. At the plate, Makai starts in a tall stance, he has a simple load, and has impressive bat speed. He needs to continue to get to a balanced position and attack the inside part of the ball to improve his ability to drive the ball. On the bump, Makai has confidence in his fastball and finds a consistent balance point. He rides his backside down hill and has a full finish. Makai is a hard worker and we hope to see his progress in the future.

10/19/2019 - Interactive Video Program - Salt Lake City, UT Makai is a RHP/1B prospect who will graduate in 2026. On the mound, Makai shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 60mph with arm side run. Forkball sits from 54-55mph. Changeup sits from 49-53mph with cutting action as he throws with deceptive arm speed. In the field, Makai gets into a square position and fields the ball out in front of his body. He throws from a side arm angle and keeps his throws consistently on-line to his target. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an athletic stance and takes a short stride. He gets into his load drives through well with his lower half. He takes an aggressive hack and makes solid contact. Overall abilities can improve with work on the following.

Pitching
1. Earlier separation
2. Looser arm action
3. Lower half drive
Infield
1. Footwork
2. Lateral range
3. Quicker exchange
Hitting
1. Smoother rhythm
2. Center balance
3. Level swing path

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
