10/28/2015 - Under Armour SoCal Classic, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Makana continues to work hard and display his next level tools on the diamond. In the OF, he plays very hard, working to get to every ball imaginable. His actions are smooth and he is light on his feet. As he develops foot speed and cleaner routes to balls, his OF abilities will take a jump. On the mound, this LHP works from the hi 3/4 slot with repeatable mechanics. His FB shows tail in the 70-73 with a 2-pitch off speed mix in the low to mid 60s. Working on his direction to the plate will improve command. Offensively, he works up the middle of the field doing an excellent job staying inside the ball with his compact swing. Refining his timing mechanism and engaging his lower 1/2 will allow his offensive abilities to improve. Overall, Makana is a team player that strives to get better every day.

12/27/2014 - Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic Makana continues to shine on the diamond. With the bat, this lefty proves again that he can swing it. Swing is short/compact as he connects and hits the ball on a line. He puts the barrel on the ball consistently, battling in every at-bat. In the OF, Makana hustles well and covers a ton of ground. Exchange is clean as he works in-line toward his target. On the bump, he throws strikes and works ahead in the count. He drives off the rubber with his lower 1/2 and finishes with extension. He keeps runners close with a quick pick-off move. Makana is a great teammate who plays hard every day.

06/21/2014 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 Makana continues to work hard on his game. On the mound, this lefty works to a controlled balance point and gets good glove-side lead. He finished out over his front side and in a square fielding position. He fills up the zone and throws strikes with both his FB and CH. Changeup shows sink as it compliments his FB well. At 1B, Makana shows active footwork around the bag and can make adjustments to inaccurate throws. With the bat, this LH swinger stays back in a loaded position and waits for his pitch. He drives the ball up the middle as he connects with the ball consistently. Only a 2016 grad - Makana is a coachable player who will only continue to get better.

08/10/2013 - College PREP - Maui, HI Makana is an athletic 1B/LHP with good athleticism. At the plate, Makana has a good approach and swing path getting good extension while displaying consistent gap power. Makana shows an open stance allowing him to use his lower half, and should continue to work on a more directional stride to hit all fields. In the field, Makana demonstrated soft hands, quick and aggressive footwork allowing him to be agile and an anchor at 1B. On the mound, he displayed a smooth, over the top, loose arm-action with the ability to throw his FB for strikes. His best off-speed pitch was sharp with late break for strikes, acting more as a slurve (CB and SL combo). Makana's delivery was directional on all pitches while finishing in a good athletic stance. Makana is a talented, young player with good body language that enjoys being on the diamond.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
