Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • LHP/OFPosition Projection

12/27/2014 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 2 Lombardi continues to show as LHP/OF but projects slightly better on the mound for the next level where he has improved his abilities. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 79 mph. Fastball shows a range of 75-79 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with late / sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a plus feel for with arm side run. Control is tremendous as he throws strikes with all his pitches, pounding the zone. Stock on the mound will continue to increase as he builds more arm strength. In the OF, feet are active as he takes proper routes / angles and works to get behind balls. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he plays through balls more with momentum to target and increases foot quickness. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup and aggressive approach. Hands are loose work through a level swing path. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he works to get stride foot down sooner and work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will increase as he learns to use his lower half more and add overall body strength. Mental makeup is a plus as he is a hard worker, is very coachable, and has an upside on the mound.

12/27/2013 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City Mario is a hardworking, very coachable, young man who is a student of the game. He continues to show on the mound and at 1B for the first time but currently, projects slightly best on the mound. He shows works fast and throws a lot of strikes with all his pitches. Fastball showed a range of 73-76 mph with arm side run. Changeup is best off speed pitch, showing a feel for with sinking action. Breaking ball displays sweeping action as he needs to work to stay on top of pitch more. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he attacks ball more, increases foot quickness, and present hands more out front. At the plate, hitting grades have improved slightly through a balanced setup. Hands are loose as he makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will increase as he learns to use his lower half more.

07/31/2013 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 Mario showed best on the mound in his latest Factory outing in a tournament setting. The LHP threw three pitches, topping out at 75 MPH with his fastball and throwing his CH effectively with arm side run. He was successful keeping hitters off-balance with his CH, and showed some mound presence. Long toss/throwing program is essential to improve his game in preparation for the next level. In the outfield, he is a good communicator that works hard, gets into an athletic fielding position and secures the ball with sure hands. Offensively, he has a level swing path, gets through the zone with the barrel after getting himself to a solid launch position. Throughout the week, Lombardi made adjustments to his game and showed great improvements on his hitting extension. In all, Mario projects best as a LHP, and is a coachable young guy that shows aptitude.

07/01/2013 - College PREP - Charleston, WV Mario worked out as a LHP/OF in Charleston, WV and will graduate in 2015. In the OF Mario shows long arm action and accurate throws. He is sure handed and takes good routes to the ball. He would benefit from playing long toss to increase arm strength and agility work to increase his speed. On the mound Lombardi has free and loose arm action. He works inline and has on time separation. He throws both fastball and change with command. Both pitches have some movement to them with his fastball having late run. His curveball has 2/8 action to it but struggles to get low in the zone. Having more arm extension will help Mario work this pitch down in the zone. At the plate, he has a tall closed stance. His swing path is level and is a pull type hitter. Mario's swing can be a bit stiff and choppy and focusing some work on smoothing out his rotation can allow his body to loosen up and his contact to be more consistent.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
