Official Scouting Report

  • Position Projection

05/20/2012 - College PREP - Mesa (Phoenix), AZ Martin continues to show improvement since the Arizona Select Training. His 60 time has improved to a 7.50 while seeing improvement in his arm strength on the mound ranging from 76-78 mph. Martin continues to display an athletic delivery with good tempo on the mound. Fastball shows good downhill plane with run. Defensively, grades have shown improvement displaying fluid footwork and a good fielding position fielding the ball out in front. At the plate, he displays a good athletic setup and a balanced approach. Martin's lower half has shown improvement and hitting grades will continue to improve with added strength and a stronger load.

11/11/2010 - Arizona Fall Select Training & Competition - 2010 Martin showed improvements in his game at the Arizona Fall and lowered his 60 time from 8.32 to 7.89. He also improve his radar velocity from 63 to 72 MPH. At SS, Martin has quick feet, he moves well laterally, and he has a good pre-pitch set-up. He stays through his throws and throws with accuracy to his target. He will need to add arm strength and physical strength to get better. On the mound, Martin has an athletic make-up and he competes in the zone. He has decent outings during his game play, and can get better with added overall strength. Offensively, Martin swings in good rhythm and has good separation. He can hit to both sides of the field and he puts the ball in play.

07/20/2010 - Cape Cod Training 2010 - Session 3 Martin is a young (2013) two-way player at SS plus on the mound with a thin, athletic frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature, filling out. He has improved in his defense and hitting since we last saw him in January. Defensively, his feet are active in coming to get the baseball, but he needs to be more aggressive in playing through it on his throws. Glove action is presented down and out front as he displays soft, clean hands. Throws are from an over the top slot with accuracy, but getting on a consistent long toss program will help to develop more arm strength. He is a fearless defender that shows a lot of confidence. Offensively, Alcoverde shows a solid setup as he loads his hands well. Swing path is level as he keeps hands through the baseball at contact. Power numbers will continue to increase as he learns to utilize his lower half and adds muscle strength. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 58-63 mph with occasional sinking action. Breaking ball displays tight spin with gradual break. Stock on the mound will rise as more arm strength is developed. He is a good, young athlete with good baseball instincts, and with 3 years to further develop, Martin has time and room to further improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
