01/17/2014 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Malone has a lean, athletic build at 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds. He ran 7.20 in the 60 yard dash, and got down the line in 4.43 from the left side of the plate. He featured a balanced approach to hit, and showed a loose quick left handed stroke. He has some rhythm to hit, gets hands back and lands soft on stride foot - in good position to read and react. Showed ability to get barrel there, and the ball left the wood bat with good life. Behind the plate, he setup with his rear end low and was still able to function fairly well. With a simple adjustment here to get his weight more forward and activated, he stands to improve his quickness out of the chute to throw and down to block by quite a lot. He posted release times between 1.93 and 2.14, throws had some carry down thru the target. He had a little trouble getting his knees clear and down to block, and the same thing caused him some trouble to receive - clearly has the athletic ability to innate skill to work with behind the plate. This along with a quality left handed bat make him an interesting prospect.

08/18/2013 - College PREP - Dickinson, ND Malone continues to show a lot of improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a well above average runner at 7.19. Pop times have improved now showing in the low 2.10 range as he utilizes his quick, athletic feet well in working in line to his target as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Throws are accurate with life and on line carry through his target. Receiving / blocking skills show as outstanding tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, hitting abilities are now superior with outstanding raw power through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, generating plus bat speed to and through the ball, creating extension. He has leverage and strength in his swing with the baseball exploding off the bat when centered. He will hit and hit with power at the next level.

05/06/2012 - College PREP - Lakewood (Denver), CO Marvin is an athletic catcher who will graduate in 2013. Arm is accurate and has good life to his throws. He tracks the ball well receiving / blocking, shows good lateral movement, and stays soft when blocking. Marvin can improve by having a wider stance and with a cleaner exchange on throws to second. At the plate, Marvin shows a short hand path while spraying the ball to all fields. He displays good rhythm but can continue to work on balance focusing on being on the balls of his feet. Hitting grades will improve by focusing on staying inside the ball and having a stronger base.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
