Official Scouting Report

  • OF/RHPPosition Projection

02/09/2020 - College PREP - Stockton (Sacramento), CA Mason is an athletic OF/RHP that will graduate in 2020. In the OF, Mason shows athletic footwork with agile range to the ball. He gets into a good fielding position for balls on the ground and in the air creating a good lane. He presents a confident glove making quick exchanges as he works to throw. His arm action is loose as he delivers consistent and accurate throws to the infield with carry. At the plate, Mason sets up in an athletic stance taking a short stride to start the swing. He shows a smooth swing as he keeps his balance centered rotating against a firm front side. His contact is hard as he works the ball to all fields. Pitching, Mason shows a 3-pitch mix with a FB, CB, CH combo. The FB shows some good tail, the CB is 11-5 with sharp break, and the CH has good AS run with FB arm speed. Pitching, he gathers over the rubber well separating his hands on time as he works down the mound showing a free and clean arm action. He finishes with good direction and rotation as he delivers the pitch. Overall, Mason shows a solid ability to be a consistent 2-way player at the next level.

12/27/2019 - Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic (Ages 14-18) Mason is an athletic and talented 2020 2-way prospect that was eager to learn. In the OF, Mason is on time with his prep step, he creates angles to the ball, and works behind the ball. He has good reads and plays through the ball. He has a good arm but needs to be more fluid with his crow hop. At the plate, Mason starts in an open and quiet stance with loose hands. He doesn’t give away at bats and competes at all times. He needs to continue to attack the inside part of the ball, rotate his lower half, and get his front foot down on time. On the bump, Mason gathers over the rubber, he separates on time, and pitches to contact. He needs to continue to ride his back leg down hill, work north to south, and finish over the front side. He cuts his fastball, he has a sharp break on his curveball, and has run on his changeup. Mason is a competitor and we hope to see his progress in the future.

04/14/2019 - College PREP - Modesto, CA Mason is a lean, scrappy, 2-way player who pitches and plays OF. On the mound, Mason has a live arm, good balance, and he lands with a proper length stride toward the plate. His SL shows nice break, his CH comes in around 62-63 MPH, and he competes in the zone. Mason will need to get more extension on his pitches and finish in a more complete position in order for mound effectiveness to improve. In the OF, Mason has active feet, good range, and he fields in a square position. He has good pre-pitch actions, a quick/clean exchange, and he throws with accuracy to his target. Quicker feet and better routes will help OF skills get better. At the plate, Mason has good balance, strong hands, and he hits line drives. He flashes some bat speed and makes consistent contact. If Mason can use his lower body, loosen actions, and level off his swing, hitting numbers can spike.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
