Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3BPosition Projection

02/27/2022 - Official College Recruiting Membership - Visalia, CA Mateo is a solid 3B prospect in the 2024 class with wirery actions and frame. His fielding ability is immediately noticeable. The range he possesses will continue to improve and turn into some elite range with 2 years to improve upon it. At 3B he has the qualities of active feet, quick exchange, and a plus arm. These all add to his pure fielding ability and make him a defensive weapon in the corner of the infield. At the plate he shows some opposite field pop and extends through the ball. The stance is quiet and athlete with a smooth direct swing path. As he matures the power will start to jump and the bat speed will tick up as his current ability to move at the plate already shows well.

02/12/2021 - Baseball Factory Opening Day Classic (HS - West) Mateo continues to show as a top prospect on the diamond. At 3B, he displays smooth / fluid actions. Feet are active as he attacks balls and plays through well with his body. Glove action is clean but needs to present more out front. He moves well laterally with range improving as he increases foot quickness. He gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy and carry (81 mph velocity) across the diamond. At the plate, he continues to shine through a squared setup. Hands are quick (81 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap to gap pop.

09/13/2020 - National Evaluation and Tryout - Fresno, CA Mateo continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and he is a top prospect on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At the plate, hitting potential is now outstanding with well above average power potential through a squared setup. Hands are quick (81 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap-to-gap pop. At 3B, defensive abilities are outstanding as he displays smooth / athletic actions. Feet are active as he works around balls and plays through with his body. Glove action is clean and presents well out front. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground. Throws are accurate with carry across the diamond as he gets rid of the baseball quickly.

09/08/2019 - Interactive Video Program - Fresno, CA Mateo worked out at 3rd and SS during his last event and showed solid all around skills. Arm strength improved to 69 MPH, exit velocity to 74 MPH, and he ran his best 60 to date at 8.33 seconds. At 3rd, Mateo has good pre-pitch actions, active feet, and he fields athletically. He flashes a good backhand, his exchange is quick and clean, and he throws with direction and accuracy to his target. At SS, Mateo has good agility, his feet work well, and he fields cleanly; throwing with carry across the diamond. At the plate, Mateo has a tall/square stance, a rhythmic swing, and a short/direct barrel. He makes hard contact, gets good extension through, and he uses his lower body.

11/09/2017 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition in Arizona (Ages 12-14) Mateo is a 2024 C/3B prospect who plays bigger than his frame and is a great teammate. He shows advanced bat to ball skills at the plate with good hand eye coordination and a compact path. His setup is simple and square with fluid actions to load to a stacked position. He launches through the zone on a direct path to the ball and makes consistent contact to hit the ball on a line. Behind the plate, he shows feel for the position with an easy setup and active feet. He presents his hands to receive and block and gains ground to throw. Tracking pitches and receiving with a stiff wrist will allow him to stick pitches better. Mateo is an intriguing prospect we look forward to watching develop.

09/10/2017 - Interactive Video Program - Fresno, CA Mateo is a (2024-grad) as a C/3B. Defensively behind the plate, he shows a solid setup with fluid footwork. He sticks pitches with a soft mitt and tries to center when blocking. At 3B, he takes a prep step and makes active lateral cuts to the GB. He comes up with a clean exchange and makes accurate throws to his target. With the stick, Mateo presents an athletic setup with smooth rhythm to load. He whips his hands quickly through the zone and sprays pitches to all parts of the field. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Infield
1. Less glove taps
2. Develop soft hands
3. Arm strength (long toss)
Catching
1. Present low target
2. Quick exchange to throw
3. More accurate throws
Offense
1. Don't over stride
2. Improve more bat speed
3. Level out swing path

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
