  • C/SSPosition Projection

02/04/2017 - National Tryout Plus - Parker (Denver), CO Mateus is a long, lean C/SS prospect who has the ability to contribute at both positions. He is an advanced defensive catcher who receives well and is a wall behind the plate, keeping everything in front of him. He has quick, athletic actions as a catcher as he works around the ball, frames borderline pitches, and collapses quickly to block balls in the dirt. He funnels the ball into his body and is agile to block laterally with ease. At short, he shows good athleticism to get to the ball in the hole and up the middle, hustling to extend his range. Working on playing big hops will help him make more clean plays. At the plate, he has active hands to load to a power position and he lets the ball travel before launching through the zone. He drives the ball to the middle of the field and shows good contact ability to put the ball in play consistently. Mateus is an intriguing prospect we look forward to continue watching.

01/13/2017 - Baseball Factory Spring Training in Arizona (Ages 14-18) Mateus is an athletic prospect who worked hard on his skills during his time in Arizona. At SS, Matues works to get into a good position to field and shows decent hands. He can improve as a SS by presenting his hands more out front to the ball and by playing through the ball. Behind the plate, Mateus shows a good target to the pitcher and receives the ball with firms hands. He can improve as a C by setting up in a more athletic stance and by quickening his exchange to throw. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an open stance and gets into his load well. He turns on the ball well to his pull side producing decent power. Mateus can improve as a hitter by taking a shorter stride and by developing more rhythm in the box. Only a 2019 grad, Mateus has the time and potential to further develop his skills.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
