Official Scouting Report

  • SS/RHPPosition Projection

06/20/2018 - College PREP - Charleston, WV Matt continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At the plate he has improved his hitting / power potential through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work to and through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact through a line drive approach with power showing best to the pull side. In the MIF, defensive abilities have improved as well, displaying smooth / fluid actions. Feet are active in attacking ground balls and plays through with his body. Glove action is soft / sure and he presents well out front. He shows off his athletic abilities on his feeds / turn of the double play. He moves well laterally with range improving as he continues to improve foot quickness. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 77 mph. Fastball showed range of 75-77 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

12/20/2015 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic - Session 1 Matt is an athletic SS/RHP who plays the game with confidence. At SS, he hustles to his right and left and fields the GB with soft/sure hands. Transfer/exchange is clean as he works in-line toward his target at 1B. Working to field the GB more out in front along with playing through the ball more will help to improve skills at SS. With the bat, Matt has a simple setup with active hands. He remains patient and tracks pitches into the zone. Swinging on a shorter/more direct path with more bat speed will result in increased power. On the mound, Caldwell has a ton of upside. He has a solid mound presence and looks the part. Delivery is smooth & repeatable and he fills up the zone with strikes. FB tops out at 72 mph as he works it in and out. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape and can be thrown for a strike in any count. Working to drive off of the rubber with his lower 1/2 will help to get even more into his FB. Matt (2020 grad) is a gamer who brings it when he takes the field.

03/12/2015 - Yankees Spring Training Experience Matt showed very well during his time at Yankee Spring Training. He is a coachable player who listens and puts what he learns into action. At SS, he works around the GB with active footwork and is sure handed, getting his glove on almost every ball hit his way. He funnels well to a clean exchange and works in-line toward 1B. He tends to bend at his waist (rather than at his knees) which causes a high fielding position. Working to stay low, and quicken his transfer/exchange will help to improve his defensive abilities. With the bat, this RHH displays rhythm to load working back into a strong launch position. Swing is level to and through the zone as he connects and hits line drives. Working to utilize his lower ½ and engage his lower ½ will help to improve his abilities at the plate. Matt also has the ability to get on the mound and throw strikes. He has a repeatable delivery in which his works through fluid rhythm. FB shows slight arm-side fun and will get in on the RHH. Matt is a go-to guy who will fill up the zone, attack hitters, and give his defense a chance. With a ton of time to still develop, Matt will progress into a solid player in the years to come with his work ethic and coachability.

11/13/2014 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City Matt is a hard worker who shows a love for the game. At SS, he displays active prep footwork and moves on the balls of his feet. He fields the ball cleanly, has a quick release and fires accurate throws across the diamond. Presenting his glove and fielding the ball more out in front will help him to avoid getting the 'in-between hop'. Offensively, this RHH has an open setup with rhythm to load. Swing path is level as he barrels the ball up consistently. Increasing his bat speed and finishing with extension through contact will help to improve his offensive skill-set. Matt also threw a couple of innings. He presents confidence on the mound and works quickly, keeping hitters off balance. FB now tops out at 58 mph as he works both sides of the plate. He uses his lower 1/2 well and drives off of the rubber. More glove side lead will help keep him directional toward the plate. Matt is a versatile player who will only continue to develop (2020) grad.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
