12/27/2013 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City McCarthy is a hardworking catcher with a positive attitude and plus makeup. Behind the plate, feet are active as he works in line to his target through a solid setup and clean transfer / exchange. Pop times where in the 2.30 range with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength and work to get rid of the ball quicker. Receiving / blocking skills show as playable tools that will play well at the next level as he continues to improve. At the plate, Matt shows a squared setup with balance. Hands are loose and he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields through a solid line drive approach. He makes consistent contact with hitting grades improving as he softens front side. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. At the event, he was 3 for 8 with a 2B.

07/12/2013 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition - Session 1 Matt is a young 2B/C that will graduate in 2016. At 2B, feet are active as he works to square ball balls up, displaying clean hands. He needs to play through balls more while presenting hands more out front, and improve foot quickness to continue to improve defensive grade. Behind the plate, feet are active as he works in line through a clean transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times show in the 2.28-2.31 range with accuracy on his throw. Pop times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills show as playable tools as he continues to improve. At the plate, McCarthy shows a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are loose to and through a level swing path, creating extension. Power numbers will continue to increase as he learns to use his lower half more. Strike zone discipline is solid as he shows a good eye of the plate. Mental makeup is a plus as he is a hard worker with a great attitude. With 2 years to further develop, Matt has abilities with time and room to continue to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
