Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 2B/RHPPosition Projection

01/16/2017 - National Tryout Plus - Mesa (Phoenix), AZ Matt is a 2019 RHP/2B prospect who is currently slightly more advanced at second base. He has a quick, clean arm on the mound that gives him deception and makes his ball explode on hitters. He is a three pitch pitcher with a low 70's fastball, a 10-4 curve and a mid 60's changeup with sink. He gathers himself well over the rubber and gets to a good balance point with on time separation to maintain his release point and throw strikes, especially with the fastball. At second, he stays low to field, centering the ball in his body to keep everything in front. He goes to his backhand well and makes nice flips and feeds to start the DP. At the dish, he shows a middle approach with a compact, level swing that allows him to hit the ball where it's pitched. He makes consistent contact and is able to hit line drives with solid hand eye coordination and barrel accuracy. Starting earlier will help him catch up to velocity and become a complete hitter. Matt is a prospect we will definitely keep an eye on as he continues to progress.

01/18/2016 - National Tryout Plus - Mesa (Phoenix), AZ Matt continues to work hard on his skills. With the bat, this RHH has a square setup with rhythm in his hands. He gets loaded, waits for his pitch and swings on a level path. He barrels the ball up and drives the middle of the field. Swinging against a firm front side will allow him to engage more of his lower 1/2 - resulting in increased power. At 2B - Matt hustles into a square fielding position behind the GB. He gathers well and has a clean exchange to throw. Presenting his glove more out in front will help to improve skills at 2B. On the mound, this RHP maintains fluid tempo, has smooth separation and stays directional toward the plate. He fills up the zone and throws strikes with all 3 pitches. FB now tops out at 61 mph as he works to keep it down in the zone. Breaking ball shows 10/4 shape while CH has slight sink. Finishing with more extension on his follow through will help to improve effectiveness on the mound. Only a 2019 grad - Matt still has a ton of time to develop his skills and physically mature (get stronger).

07/10/2015 - California Select Training & Competition - Session 1 Matt is a young, athletic 2B/RHP that will graduate in 2019 with a promising future on the diamond. Currently, he projects best at 2B for the next level. At 2B, feet are active as he displays proper footwork as he works to square ground balls up, displaying clean hands as he makes the routine plays. Hands / feet work well together through the fielding process. He attacks balls while presenting hands out front. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he increases foot quickness. At the plate he shows a squared setup with rhythm. Hands are loose and he makes consistent contact and stays inside the ball to utilize all fields.. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to get stride foot down to work on time. Power numbers will increase as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 52-58 mph. Stock to the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength, works to throw more strikes, and develops off speed stuff. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable. With 4 years to further develop, Matt has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
