Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

04/25/2010 - College PREP - Fort Washington, PA Matt showed similar skills at the Fort Washington workout as he did at previous events. He is a 2-way player that currently projects better at 3B than on the mound. In the INF, Matt has soft / sure hands, and he fields the ball out in front of his body. He has a loose / accurate arm and he follows his throws to his target. If Matt can start in a lower fielding position and build more arm strength, defensive grades can further improve. On the mound, Matt has good balance and a fluid delivery. His mechanics are sound, and he has good 12-6 spin on his CB. Improved overall command, and added velocity could help get Matt more looks on the hill. Offensively, Matt has good balance, bat speed, and makes good use of his lower 1/2. He gets in a good launch position, has a level swing, and can spray the ball to all fields. Hitting can continue to improve if Matt can shorten his swing, and get more extension to and through contact.

12/27/2009 - Christmas Camp and Tournament #2 Reader continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities, especially at 3B where he displayed plus hands and feet in making all the plays. Glove action is soft, sure as he works into an easy arm action with throws showing carry and accuracy across the diamond. At the plate, Matt has a short compact swing that displays strength with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered as he was 2 for 9 with a 2B and 3B at the event. On the mound ,fastball showed a range of 74-79 mph as he projects best as a position player for the next level.

10/21/2009 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic - 2009 Matt is a young two-way player at 3B plus on the mound with a solid average body that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Currently, he projects best at 3B for the next level. Foot speed is solid average as indicated by his 7.31 60 time as he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active but needs to be more aggressive in coming to get the baseball with his feet and hands, currently waits with weight on heels causing a deep glove action that allows the baseball to dictate play. As he learns to play through balls, it will enable his hands to be presented more down and out front of his body with hands / feet working together in getting rid of the baseball quickly. Defensive abilities are average with solid average arm strength with carry on throws. He needs to get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength, raising velocities. At the plate, Reader has slightly above average abilities with near above average power through a balanced approach. He loads well with proper separation into a short, compact stroke, showing a solid feel for the barrel as the baseball jumps off his bat when centered. Power numbers will continue to increase as he learns to keep the barrel through the baseball at contact. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 74-79 mph. Changeup is best off speed pitch, showing solid average with a feel for. Breaking balls displays downward tilt with gradual break. With 2 years to further develop, Matt has potential to be a solid player at 3B as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
