Official Scouting Report

01/18/2013 - 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Robbins topped at 79 with his fastball this outing, a little down from the low 80s we've seen previously. His breaking ball was again his best pitch however, he threw it with good feel and the pitch had depth and sharp 11-5 action when he stayed on top of it. He also mixed in a 69-70 CH, giving him a usable three pitch mix. He threw a lot of strikes and pitched to contact, changed speeds well. His delivery was balanced, and he broke his hands in time to give his arm a chance to work. His arm worked short out of the glove, and out front as well. Direction was good, and landing was sound. Tended to finish a little upright, not allowing much extension out front through the pitch. At the plate, he hit from a balanced setup and did a good job of launching to a solid hitting position with his body. His stroke was short and level, and he stayed on pitches away well. Overall, a capable two-way player with a fluid left handed stroke and ability to throw strikes with a three pitch mix.

08/03/2011 - Pirate City World Series 2011 - Session 1 Robins showed as a two-way player at 2B and on the mound for the first time. Currently, he projects best at 2B for the next level. He has improved his hitting grades to well above average through an aggressive setup. Hands are quick, generating bat speed as he attacks balls with his hands. He shows a feel for the barrel with power numbers improving as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently through the swing. During his time at Pirate City, he made good adjustments when facing 2 strike counts. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 72-74 mph with slight run and displays a breaking ball with 11/5 shape with early break.

06/13/2011 - College PREP - Charleston, WV Matt is a tall, thin, and athletic 2B that will graduate in 2013. Foot speed is solid as indicated by his 7.28 60 time. Defensively, his feet are active and aggressive as he attacks ground balls and plays through with his body, displaying a low approach. He maintains plus body control and presents hands out front, showing an outstanding glove action. Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy and carry into target. Offensively, Robbins is a switch hitter that currently projects better from the left side. He shows a balanced approach and works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Swing path is level and he shows a solid feel for the barrel from the left side. From the right side, he needs to get his hands more involved and work on shortening his swing, as well as maintaining better balance through the swing. Matt has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
