09/16/2020 - Pathway AZ Upperclass - 18U Matthew continues to shine on the diamond. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick (86 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. At 3B, he displays smooth actions. Feet are active as he works to square balls and plays through with his body. Glove action is clean and presents well out front. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. Throws are accurate with on line carry (83 mph velocity) across the diamond. Behind the dish, he presents a soft/sure mitt showing great pocket awareness sticking pitches. He utilizes his body well through the blocking process but needs to work to get body down sooner. Pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.19.

09/04/2020 - HS All-Region Tournament Matthew continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. At the plate is where he has improved the most, now displaying outstanding power potential through an athletic setup. Hands are quick (90 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. At 3B, he displays smooth / athletic actions. Feet are active as he works around balls and plays through with his body. Glove action is clean and presents well out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program.

06/16/2019 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 (Ages 14-18) Matthew is an athletic and talented 2021 2-way prospect. At 3B, Matthew is on time with his prep step, he presents a low/early glove, and works from the ground up. He has a clean exchange but needs to quick his release to make up for his lack of arm strength. Improving his arm strength will improve his carry on the ball and ability to throw runners out on balls hit deep to his backhand. At the play, Matthew has a controlled load, keeps a quiet head, and keeps his head down at contact. He looks to do damage early in counts, has good bat speed, and hits the ball gap to gap. On the bump, Matthew has confidence in his fastball, works at a quick pace, and pounds the strike zone. He finds a good balance point, works north to south in his delivery, and finishes over his front side. Matthew will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future. He was a solid team player and works hard all week.

02/10/2019 - College PREP - Martinez, CA Matthew is a lean 3B/RHP prospect who will gradaute in 2021. In the field, Matthew shows active footwork and is agile moving to his glove side. He fields in a low position and makes a clean exchange, keeping his throws accurate and on-line to his target. Fielding the ball out in front of his body can help Matthew improve defensively. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a square stance and takes a short stride. He is smooth getting into his load and drives through well with his lower half. He takes a short swing with fast bat speed, leading to loud contact to all fields. Matthew can improve as a hitter by maintaining center balance. On the mound, Matthew gathers over the rubber and works with a clean arm. He extends through his release and finishes with his chest over his front knee. Matthew shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 74mph with tailing action. Breaking ball sits from 59-63mph with 11-5 break. Changeup sits from 65-67mph. Matthew can improve as a pitcher by long tossing to build up his arm strength. With two more years to develop, Matthew has the time and potential to further progress his skills on the field.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
