Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • LHP/1BPosition Projection

06/09/2019 - National Tryout Plus - Hoover (Birmingham), AL Matthew is a LHP/1B prospect who continues to showcase his skills on the field. On the mound, Matthew gathers over the rubber and separates his hands on time. He works with a clean arm and stays inline towards the plate. Matthew shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 77mph with tailing action. Breaking ball sits from 64-66mph with 2-8 break. Changeup sits from 69-71mph with late arm side run as he throws with deceptive arm speed. Extending through his release more can help Matthew improve as a pitcher. In the field, Matthew shows active footwork and fields the ball out in front of his body. He makes a clean exchange and gets rid of the ball quickly, keeping his throws accurate with carry through his target. Matthew can improve defensively by increasing his lateral range. At the plate, this LHH sets up in a square stance and takes a short stride. He takes a direct swing with decent bat speed, leading to solid line drives. Working a smoother load into his swing can help Matthew improve as a hitter. Overall, Matthew is a solid prospect who has the potential to further progress his skills on the field.

12/27/2018 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Matthew is a compact, two-way player who has shown improvements in his game. He can pick it at first with soft hands and feel around the bag. He has quick feet and a good first step to show range and make tough plays. His hands are spoft and smooth to field cleanly and pick throws. At the dish, he has a sound approach with a controlled swing from a strong base. He makes consistent contact to all fields and finishes on a firm front side. On the bump, this southpaw shows deception from a low ¾ arm slot and gets good break on his pitches. His FB reaches 77mph with run and his 2-8 CB shows good break. Getting to a consistent balance and release point will make his pitches look the same and improve control. Matthew is an exciting prospect with a high ceiling on the field.

10/14/2018 - College PREP - Hoover (Birmingham), AL Mathew is an athletic and strong 2022 LHP prospect. On the bump, Mathew gathers over the rubber, separates on time, and has a loose arm action. He drives his lower half toward the plate and works north to south. He throws a heavy fastball with sink, his curveball has tight spin, and his changeup has good sink. At the plate, Mathew starts in a crouched stance, loads his hands back into the drive position, and gets his front foot down on time. He creates backside rotation with his lower half, attacks the inside part of the ball, and hits to all fields. Mathew will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
