Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • SS/RHPPosition Projection

09/13/2017 - Under Armour Fall Classic, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Matthew is a coachable SS/RHP prospect who worked hard on his skills during his time at the Under Armour Fall Classic. He has always been a solid and consistent performer for us, and he showed some good improvements in Florida. In the field, Matthew shows efficient footwork and gains ground to the ball well, especially to his glove side. He gets into a square position and fields the ball out in front of his body. He has a clean exchange and gains momentum well on his throws which allows them to be consistently on-line to his target. He has the frame and ability to play both SS and 3B at the next level. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a tall stance and shows a smooth rhythm in the box. He is fluid getting into his load and comes through the zone with fast bat speed, leading to gap to gap pop. On the mound, we saw some excellent improvements from Matthew. As evident in his most recent video, he has a phenomenal pitcher's body type at 6'4. He shows a fluid delivery as he separates his hands on time and works with a quick, clean arm action. He has a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 83 mph. Breaking ball sits from 65-67 mph with 11-5 break. Changeup ranges from 71-73 mph as he throws with similar arm speed to his fastball. He has a tremendous amount of upside and there is something about him and his demeanor - he works hard and doesn't let things get to him. He is a competitor and he makes an impact on the field. He will be an excellent addition to a college program.

06/04/2017 - College PREP - Troy (Albany), NY Matthew is a well-rounded SS/RHP prospect who has a tall, projectable frame and versatile skill. Offensively, Matthew has a square setup with a centered balance. He maintains direction with his stride as he uses his lower half throughout his swing. Matthew has a direct swing path that produces consistent contact. He has a line drive approach with the ability to show power to the pull side. In the field, Matthew plays with active footwork and loose, agile actions allowing him to cover good ground. He presents his glove and works low to high as he fields the ball squarely with a clean exchange. He has a short arm action throwing from a high 3/4 arm slot and shows strong, accurate throws across the diamond. On the mound, Matthew has a balanced, on-time delivery throwing with a free arm action from a high 3/4 arm slot. He extends through his release and stays square to home plate with the proper stride length. Matthew commands his fastball with tail movement. His curveball has sharp, late break and his changeup is developing. Overall, Matthew is an intriguing prospect who has talent on both sides of the ball and high upside.

10/05/2016 - Arizona Freshman/Sophomore Fall Classic Matthew continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. In the MIF, he displays smooth / fluid actions. Feet are active as he works around and plays through balls with his body. He moves well laterally and presents soft /sure hands well out front. Hands / feet work well together and he gets rid of the baseball quickly with carry, and accuracy on his throws across the diamond. At the plate, he continues to shine through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the baseball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he works to utilize his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 73-74 mph. Building more arm strength through a long toss program will aid in further development on the mound. Matthew is a great teammate who is very coachable and works to be the best player he can be. He may project as a corner infielder at the next level as well, as he is a versatile player who can do a lot on the field.

09/04/2016 - College PREP - Troy (Albany), NY Matthew is SS/RHP prospect with a projectable frame that continues to get better on the baseball field. In the field, Matthew plays with active feet and takes good angles giving him above average range. He has good hands with a quick, clean exchange. Matthew throws from a high 3/4 arm slot with a short arm action producing accurate throws with carry. Offensively, Matthew has a balanced, open stance and takes short stride. He has fluid rhythm and produced consistent contact to the pull side. On the mound, Matthew has an on-time delivery throwing from a high 3/4 slot with a clean arm action giving him above average control. He maintains square direction and stays in-line throughout his delivery. Matthew's FB ranges from 75-78 MPH. He also features a sinking change-up 66-69 MPH and 11-5 breaking CB ranging from 66-68 MPH. Matthew has upside in all facets of the game and is certainly a prospect to watch.

06/29/2015 - National Tryout - Troy (Albany), NY Chase continues to progress in his game. At SS, he shows his athleticism as he works lightly on the balls of his feet. Hands are soft/sure as he funnels smoothly to a clean exchange. DP turn is quick/efficient with accurate throws to 1B. At the plate, this RHH works back into a loaded position getting a good weight transfer. Swing path is level as he connects and drives the ball back up the middle of the field. Increased bat speed will result in more pop off of his barrel. On the mound, he gets good glove side lead and stays directional toward the dish. Mechanics are sound as he repeats his delivery well. FB tops out at 70 mph as he throws it for strikes. Continuing to develop his CB by working on a more consistent release point will help to improve effectiveness on the mound. Only a 2019 grad - Matthew will continue to find success as he works hard on his skills.

12/27/2014 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic - Session 2 Matthew is a talented two way player that showcased at SS and on the mound. In the infield he attacks the ball and stays under control with his approach. He fields with sure hands and has a quick exchange. He makes accurate throws across the diamond with good carry. At the plate he has good balance, smooth rhythm, and has an aggressive approach. He showed power potential with gap to gap power and hit solid line drives during games. On the mound Matthew showed a lot of potential. He has clean mechanics and pounds the zone with his fastball and changeup. His fastball has good arm side run and his changeup stays down in the zone with good sink / fade. Matthew has a real quiet competitiveness about him. He plays hard and does everything above average. He has a lot of upside on the mound. We are excited to watch his development over these next few years!

06/30/2014 - National Tryout - Troy (Albany), NY Matthew continues to work hard on his game. At SS, he moves around the ground ball and plays through well from right to left. He makes the plays with clean actions and works in-line toward 1B. Working from the ground-up will help to avoid getting the in-between hop. Offensively, he works back into a strong loaded position. He hits the ball where it's pitched and uses the whole field. On the mound, Matthew has repeatable mechanics and works in-line toward the dish. FB shows run while changeup is thrown with FB arm speed. A young, 2019 grad - Matthew still has a lot of time to develop his skills.

07/07/2013 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition (Ages 12-14) Matthew showed the ability to play a number of positions at the Cape Cod event. As a fielder it is important that he be more aggressive to the ball and strengthen his arm through long toss. On the mound Matthew displayed good hip coil/posture, compact balance point, clean arm action and good tempo. Finishing pitches with good extension (towel drill), working downhill and developing a smoother separation are areas for improvement. At the plate Matthew has good balance, gets through the ball and he tracks well but he needs to use his lower half and be aggressive to the ball.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
