05/12/2019 - National Tryout Plus - Justin (DFW), TX Matthew is a solid, athletic 2020 catcher. Behind the plate Matthew shows great body control setting up in an athletic and low stance, centering the ball on blocks. He presents his hands low and makes clean exchanges making quiet, athletic movements. His throws are consistently online showing a 2.0-2.2 pop time. Matthew can improve by staying in his legs on throws to second. Matthew shows line drive with gap to gap power at the plate. He sets up open and strides with smooth rhythm. His hips get through well creating plus bat speed and square contact. Matthew can see improvements by not over striding and getting on time. Matthew continues to develop into a serviceable catcher and has 2 years to grow.

10/17/2018 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Matthew is a coachable C prospect who worked hard on his skills during his time at the Arizona Junior Fall Classic. Behind the plate, Matthew shows active footwork and centers the ball when blocking. He sits in an athletic stance and sticks the ball well. He makes a clean exchange and shows a quick release on his throws to 2B, working to keep them accurate to the bag. Matthew can improve defensively by raising his arm slot to get on top of the ball and make more accurate throws. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an open stance and gets into his load well. He produces fast bat speed through the zone and drives the ball well to the opposite field. Matthew can improve as a hitter by getting into his load sooner. Overall, Matthew is a solid prospect who has the potential to contribute at the next level.

04/08/2018 - National Tryout Plus - Plano (DFW), TX Matthew continues to show as a prospect on the diamond. Behind the plate, Matthew shows efficient footwork and blocks dirt balls well to his glove side. He sits in an athletic stance and receives the ball with soft hands. He has a clean exchange and gains momentum well on his throws to 2B, keeping them consistently on-line to the bag. Matthew can improve defensively by improving his blocking to his arm side. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an open stance and takes a square stride. He shows a fluid rhythm and comes through well with his lower half. He takes a level swing with decent bat speed which leads to solid contact. Matthew can improve as a hitter by keeping his hands close to his body during his load to prevent an arm bar and long swing path. Overall, Matthew is a solid prospect who has the potential to further develop his skills on the field.

12/27/2017 - Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic (Ages 14-18) Matthew is a lean catcher who has a promising future on the diamond. Behind the plate, feet are aggressive and active as he works in line to his target, through a clean transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times show in the 2.19 range with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Glove action is soft and he sticks in the zone. He utilizes his body well through the blocking process and is a wall behind dish. At the plate he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive approach. He has strength in his swing and shows a feel for the barrel with gap-to-gap pop. Power will continue to improve as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. Mental makeup is outstanding as he has a positive attitude, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be. With 3 years to further develop, Matthew has potential with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
