Official Scouting Report

  • OF/RHPPosition Projection

05/15/2016 - College PREP - Bowie, MD Day continues to make great strides in his game. This athletic R/R showed well in the OF with taking good angles and using his momentum to carry him through his target. He does a nice job of flashing arm strength with carry with the ability to repeat a high clean transfer to throw. On the mound, Matthew continues to show good command of his 3 pitches with downhill plane. His FB sat at 77 mph, complimented by a sharp CB with 11/5 rotation and good deception. He fills up the zone with strikes and will compete. Offensively, Matthew is a contact type hitter with a quiet load and good bat speed through zone. He squares the ball up and hits line-drives. Matthew a 2018 grad shows lots of upside with still more room to grow.

07/08/2015 - National Tryout Plus - Washington DC, MD Day continues to progress on the diamond. In the OF, he tracks down fly-balls to his right and left with speed working into position behind it. He secures the ball and gains ground with momentum toward his target. At the plate, this RHH shows a patient approach with good balance. He has rhythm in his hands and whips the barrel through a level path. He hits the ball where it's pitched and utilizes the entire field. Swinging on a shorter/more direct path will result in increased pop off of his barrel. On the mound, Matthew has sound mechanics and a repeatable delivery. He gets good glove-side lead and stays directional toward the dish. FB now tops out at 75 mph while breaking ball shows to be his best off-speed pitch with 12/6 shape. Driving his lower 1/2 off of the rubber will help to increase velocity on his FB. Only a 2018 grad - this hard worker still has a ton of time to develop his skills.

01/16/2015 - Baseball Factory All-America Pre-Season Rookie Tournament This athletic 2-way player continues to show well. In the OF, Day works lightly on the balls of his feet and tracks down fly-balls with speed. He works behind the through the ball with clean/smooth actions, firing accurate throws into his target. Offensively, he displays a balanced setup with a solid base. Barrel delivery is quick as he whips it through the zone. He swings against a firm front side and generates torque, with pop off of his barrel. On the mound, Matthew works to keep the ball down in the zone resulting in GB outs. FB now tops out at 74 mph as he works to hit his spots. He finishes complete in an athletic fielding position. A very talented & versatile player - Matthew has a very bright future ahead of him.

07/22/2014 - National Tryout - Washington DC, MD Matthew showed improvements in his overall game during his last workout in DC. Hitting grades improved to 42's with good bat speed, activated hands, and good barrel accuracy. In the OF, Matthew attacks the ball aggressively, feet are quick, and hands are sure. He gains solid momentum toward his target and he stays on top of the ball with carry through to his target. On the hill, Matthew competes in the zone, he keeps his eyes on target, and his arm is loose. He mixes his off-speed pitches well and finishes out over his front knee.

12/27/2013 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic Matthew is an athletic young player who listens well and has good upside. As an outfielder he showed good quickness, hands, plays through well and has good arm strength with carry. He needs to get better breaks off the bat and take more direct angles to the ball. On the mound Matthew has a good body, tempo, arm action and throws strikes. He can improve by staying in-line to the target, finish pitches with extension and develop off-speed. At the plate Matthew is direct to the ball, showed good barrel accuracy and uses the entire field but he needs to stride at the pitcher and finish swing aggressively.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
