09/25/2019 - Arizona Sophomore Fall Classic Matthew is a strong LHP/1B prospect who worked hard on his skills during his time at the Arizona Sophomore Fall Classic and has improved his baseball abilities. In the field, he shows active footwork and presents his glove out front to field. He shows accuracy and carry (81 mph velocity) when he throws to his target. Matthew can improve as a 1B by improving his footwork around the bag and increasing foot/quickness. At the plate, this LHH sets up in an athletic stance and takes a short stride to the ball. He is smooth getting into his load and comes through the zone well with his lower half. He takes a direct swing to the ball with fast bat speed (88 mph exit velocity) which leads to hard contact. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 75 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with tailing action. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

01/21/2018 - Interactive Video Program - Kapolei (Honolulu), HI Matthew is a tall, athletic, 2-way player who pitches and plays 1B. On the mound, Matthew has a clean arm action, he stands over the rubber well balanced, and he gets good extension on his pitches. He has strength in his body, a clean arm action, and he competes in the zone with his pitches. At 1st base, Matthew attacks the ball aggressively, he uses two hands, and has a clean exchange with a loose arm to his target. Offensively, Matthew has a square set-up, a proper load, and he swings in good rhythm. He is a strong hitter with fast bat speed and he makes hard/consistent contact. Matthew can improve skills with work on the following.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
