He utilizes his body well through the blocking process but needs to square up stance to improve lateral movement. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He works to get behind and plays through with his body. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. At the plate, he shows a squared / athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a level swing path with power improving as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently.

03/10/2019 - College PREP - Bel Air (Baltimore), MD Matthew is an OF/C prospect who continues to showcase his skills on the field. In the OF, Matthew makes the routine plays and keeps his throws accurate to his target. Getting into a more athletic fielding position can help Matthew improve defensively. Behind the plate, Matthew sits in an athletic stance and receives well. He throws from a high 3/4 angle and makes accurate throws to 2B. Matthew can improve as a C by increasing his range to block. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a square stance and takes a short stride. He drives his lower half though and takes a level swing, leading to consistent contact and gap to gap pop. Working a smoother load into his swing can help Matthew improve as a hitter. Overall, Matthew is a solid prospect who has the potential to further progress his skills on the field.

10/21/2018 - College PREP - Potomac, MD Matthew continues to shine on the diamond. Behind the plate, pop times showed in the 2.45 range with accuracy on his throws. Time will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. He displays a soft glove and sticks balls well in the zone but needs to quieten his body through the receiving process. He uses his body through the blocking process but needs to work to get his body down sooner and improve his lateral movement. In the OF, he take proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He works to get behind balls and plays through with momentum to his target. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick and he has strength in his swing with the baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Power is best shown to the pull side and will continue to increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently.

07/15/2018 - Baseball Factory D.C. All Star Experience (Ages 14-18) Matthew is an athletic and talented OF prospect that made several adjustments during the weekend training event. In the OF, Matthew has efficient footwork to the ball and has an active prep step. He is aggressive on ground balls and works behind the ball. He needs to continue to create momentum in his lower half when throwing to the plate. At the plate, Matthew starts in a squared stance and gets his front foot down on time. He needs to continue to attack the ball with the lower half and stay balanced through contact. Matthew will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

10/22/2017 - College PREP - Potomac, MD Matthew projects nicely as a 2-way player both in the OF and behind the plate. In the OF, Matthew works behind the ball well, he reads it off the bat properly, and takes good angles. Matthew has efficient footwork, he centers the ball well, and throws with carry to his target. If Matthew can raise his arm slot to avoid the ball from tailing, and quicken footwork and exchange, abilities in the OF will get better. Behind the plate, Matthew sticks the ball well, his footwork is active, and he smothers it well. He has a balanced stance, and a quick release to his target. Offensively, Matthew has a level swing, good balance, and strength in his swing. He makes square contact through a line drive approach. More rhythm and extension through the ball will help hitting numbers spike.

01/13/2017 - Baseball Factory Spring Training in Arizona (Ages 14-18) Matthew is a strong 2019 OF prospect who is a real gamer that works his hardest to get better and help out his team. He demonstrated impressive contact ability at the plate with feel for the barrel while keeping his eyes behind the bat through his swing. His setup is tall and open at the plate with an on time stride to get his foot down early. He has a powerful swing with good extension through contact to hit the ball hard and drive it to the pull side. In the outfield, he wows with his hands as they work quickly and cleanly to field, transfer and throw, keeping runners stationary. He works to get through the ball and makes accurate throws to his target to get the ball back in quickly. Working on fielding out front will allow him to gain more momentum through and to his target to make strong throws. Matthew is a prospect we look forward to following as he continues his development.

He secures the ball with 2-hands, is sure handed and gathers well. Working more into position behind the ball will allow him to play through it and gain more ground toward his target. At SS, Matthew hustles around the GB into a square fielding position. He presents his glove, fields the ball out in front, and works in-line toward his target. He has a clean exchange and makes accurate throws to 1B. Getting on a long toss program will help to increase arm strength and aid in his development both in the OF & INF. Only a 2019 grad - Matthew still has a lot of time to develop his tools and physically mature (gain strength).

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
