10/18/2015 - College PREP - El Paso, TX Matthew continues to show well on the diamond. Defensively at SS, he maintains fluid/athletic actions working from the ground-up. He presents his glove, is sure handed and has a smooth transfer to throw. In the OF, Matthew covers ground to his right and left working lightly on the balls of his feet. He secures the ball and gains ground toward his target. As a hitter - this lefty has a balanced setup with simple/quiet actions. Barrel delivery is level/repeatable as he connects and drives the ball back up the middle of the field. Matthew is a versatile athlete whose tools will translate well into the next level.

10/19/2014 - National Tryout - El Paso, TX Matthew continues to progress his skills. Offensively, this LHH shows a balanced approach with fluid rhythm. He delivers the barrel on a smooth stroke and hits the ball where it's pitched, driving it to all parts of the field. At SS, he shows quick/active footwork and can cover some ground. He works through the ball from right to left and has a quick release to throw. An all-around solid player - Matthew will find success on the diamond.

10/23/2013 - Arizona Freshman/Sophomore Fall Classic At Matthew's most recent Baseball Factory event, his intangibles and coachability shined through. Holguin has a passion for the game and is a very cerebral player. Defensively, he has strong mechanics with good hands, and makes the routine. Working at game speed throughout practice will help Matt to slow down actual game speed and make plays with added ease. At the dish, he has a level path, balance throughout, and a solid two-handed finish. In all - Holguin is the type of player that has a lot of upside as he works hard over the next couple of years.

06/15/2013 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 Matthew continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.46 runner. He works to square up balls and plays through well while presenting hands out front well. At the plate, he shows a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands works through a level swing path and he makes consistent contact. Power numbers will increase as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 70-71 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays downward tilt with tight spin. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude and plays hard.

01/21/2013 - College PREP - Tucson, AZ Matthew is a RHP/SS who will graduate on 2016. As a SS he has an aggressive approach and an accurate arm. His hands are sure and he has fluid feet. Matthew should work on getting lower in his fielding position, this should help him become a more solid defender. Offensively, Matthew hits inside the ball. He has a level swing and makes good contact with the ball. He should focus on getting his weight out over the plate and his lower half rotation. With a little more front side coil he could have more power in his swing. On the mound he drops his arm but has good mound presence. He lands direct and has good glove side pull. Matthew's curve ball has slight movement with potential. He should focus on being more direct and extending on his delivery.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
