Matthew is an athletic 2014 graduate who plays second base. As a fielder, he closes on the ball well, makes plays, and has solid DP turns. At the plate, Matthew has a quiet/middle approach. He shows good bat speed and his lower half works. He will become a lot more consistent and smooth if he does not wrap the bat around his head on the load. Matthew has all the athleticism to be a very good player as long as he puts the work in and makes the necessary adjustments.
07/29/2013 - Under Armour Southwest Championships, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One
Matthew showed on the mound and at 3B for the first time at the event. Currently, he projects best at 3B for the next level. Defensive grades are outstanding as he uses his athletic feet well in attacking ground balls and plays through well, while presenting his soft / sure hans well out front. He works to get rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy and carry across the diamond. At the plate, he shows a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, generating bat speed through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Barrel accuracy is a plus with baseball exploding off the bat when centered. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 80-82 mph with slight run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break and shows potential as being a quality pitch at the next level. Command / control are outstanding as he locates well and attacks hitters. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he is a hard worker and is very coachable.
