Official Scouting Report

08/10/2011 - Pirate City World Series 2011 - Session 2 Matt continues to show improvement from his previous workout. His 60 yard time dropped from 7.45 to 7.27, pop time average dropped to 2.27 and his hitting for power grade went from 40-42. He has a solid setup behind the plate with a clean exchange and accuracy to his throws. At the plate he shows good balance, rhythm, quick hands and the ability to hit the ball all over the field. He is passionate about the game and has high energy at all times. He needs to continue to work on his arm strength, quickness in his feet and receiving skills behind the plate. He is still young and with hard work will continue to show improvement to become a player to follow at the next level.

06/12/2011 - College PREP - Medford (Boston), MA Matt is a young, lanky, athletic player that catches and plays OF. Behind the plate, Matt has soft / sure hands, active feet, and he catches in a low / athletic position. He centers the ball well, looks it in, and he has textbook blocking skills. Matt has a quick exchange and he throws with a short / quick arm action with accuracy and average strength to 2nd base. A more relaxed approach, not standing straight up to throw, and adding arm strength will help catching grades improve. In the OF, Matt is aggressive to the ball, his hands are sure, and he makes plays. He works behind the ball well, his feet are active, and he plays on the balls of his feet. Matt works through the ball well, his exchange is quick and clean, and he throws with a short / loose arm with accuracy and carry to his target. Offensively, Matt has a square / athletic set-up, a proper load, and a short / square stride. He has good balance, average bat speed, and he makes square contact. Matt has a level swing, he puts the ball in play, and he can spray to all fields. Hitting can get better with a looser grip, letting the ball travel deeper, and with a shorter stroke.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
