09/09/2018 - National Tryout Plus - La Verne (Los Angeles), CA Matthew is an athletic 2B/RHP prospect who continues to showcase his skills on the field. In the field, Matthew shows efficient footwork and centers the ball in the middle of his body. He fields with soft hands and makes a clean exchange to throw, keeping his throws accurate and on-line to his target. Matthew can improve defensively by fielding in a lowering position. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a tall stance and takes his stride on time. He is smooth getting into his load and drives through well with his lower half. He takes a level swing with decent bat speed which leads to solid contact to his pull side. Matthew can improve as a hitter by maintaining center balance. On the mound, Matthew gathers over the rubber and separates his hands on time. He works with a clean arm action and finishes square to the plate. Matthew shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 81mph. Breaking ball sits from 68-70mph with 11-5 break. Changeup sits from 70-72mph with sinking action. Matthew can improve as a pitcher by getting more extension through his release. Overall, Matthew is a solid prospect who has the potential to contribute at the next level.

06/23/2018 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Matthew is a well-rounded 2B prospect who stays calm and leads by example. In the field, Matthew plays with quick, fluid footwork and takes effective angles to the ball. He fields the ball in an athletic position with soft hands. Matthew throws with a short arm action from a high 3/4 arm slot. He plays with good momentum through the baseball showing accurate throws across the diamond. As a right-handed hitter, Matthew has a square, athletic stance with a firm front side and centered balance. He has fluid rhythm with a short, square stride. Matthew has an on-plane swing path consistently landing the barrel to the baseball. He has a middle of the field approach and the ability to use all fields. Overall, Matthew has the approach and skill on both sides of the ball to give him a bright future on the diamond.

12/17/2017 - College PREP - Thousand Oaks, CA Matthew is an athletic 2B who has a promising future on the diamond. In the MIF, defensive abilities are outstanding as he displays smooth / athletic actions. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls and plays through well with his body. Hands are soft / sure and presents well out front. He shows off his athletic abilities on his feeds / turns of the double play. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. Throws are accurate with carry across the diamond, showing a well above average arm. At the plate, he shows an open setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing and stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. With 2 years to further develop, Matthew has a lot of potential and will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities as he continues to develop.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
