01/18/2019 - 2019 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Matthew is a tall RHP/1B prospect who continued to showcase his skills at the Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament. On the mound, Matthew starts with a small rock step and separates his hands on time. He works with a quick arm and gets good extension through his release, staying inline towards the plate. Matthew shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 88mph with tailing action. Curveball sits from 72-76mph with sharp 10-4 break. Slider sits from 75-77mph. In the field, Matthew shows good range to his glove side and fields the ball out in front of his body. He makes a clean exchange and throws from a high 3/4 angle, getting good life through his target. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an atheltic stance with loose hands. He is controlled getting into a simple load and remains centered in his lower half. He takes a compact swing with fast bat speed, leading to solid contact to all fields. Overall, Matthew is a talented two way prospect who will be one to follow going into his junior season.

11/03/2018 - Mid-Atlantic Regional Pitching and Catching Weekend (Ages 14-18) Matthew is an athletic and talented pitching prospect that made several adjustments throughout the Mid Atlantic Regional Pitching and Catching Weekend. On the bump, Matthew gathers over the rubber, separates on time, and has a fluid arm action. He shows confidence and has good tempo in his delivery. He rides his back leg toward the plate, has a controlled landing, and finishes over the front side. Continuing to work north to south and riding his back leg toward the plate will increase velocity and direction. He needs to continue to long toss and increase his overall strength. Long tossing with his changeup will allow him to develop feel for this pitch as well. Matthew is a hard worker and we hope to see his progress in the future.

09/30/2018 - College PREP - Raleigh, NC Matthew is a tall, athletic RHP/1B who has a tremendous future on the diamond. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. He shows good tempo through a strong balance point and works in line to his target. Arm strength is outstanding as indicated by his top velocity of 86 mph. Fastball showed a range of 84-86 mph on a downhill plane with late life. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late / sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. Off speed stuff show as outstanding pitches that will get outs at the next level. Control is well above average as throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to increase as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Glove action is soft but needs to present more out front. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls through a low approach. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are quick (84 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing and stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap-to-gap pop. With 2 years to further develop, Matthew has a big upside on the bump and will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
