01/17/2020 - 2020 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Matthew continues to show as a prospect on the diamond at the Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament. On the mound, this righty has a 3 pitch arsenal in which to keep hitters guessing. FB shows a range of 78-81 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 12/6 shape with late / sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with tailing action. Control is outstanding as attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

01/18/2019 - 2019 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Matt had an excellent outing with Baseball Factory at the UA AA PS event in January. The 6'2/165 lbs RHP struck out 7 hitters with his three pitch mix, sitting the highest we've seen him to date at 82-85 mph. He showed signs of command with his 11/5 SL with late break from 74-75 mph. His third pitch, a CH, had good sink from 73-74 mph, and he maintained that same fastball arm speed for plus deception. His presence on the mound is strong and he had a simple move to begin his fluid, loose and clean delivery. That's not where Matt's game stops however, he then showed strong consistency defensively at 1B, and offensively from the left side. His barrel was consistently delivered on a line-drive path with present bat speed, allowing for hard contact. Defensively, he made plays squaring up his body to field, and had an accurate arm to throw. All in all - Matt is in prime shape as he enters his junior spring season, and we look for big things from this projectable righty.

10/28/2018 - College PREP - Santa Rosa, CA Matthew continues to show the makings of a special type player and continues to display improvements in his baseball abilities. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. He shows good tempo through a strong balance point and throws from a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball showed a range of 80-82 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late / sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup and shows a plus feel for pitch with arm side run. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Control is outstanding as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. At 1B, defensive abilities are now outstanding as he displays smooth fluid actions. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls and plays through with his body. Glove action is soft and presents well out front. He displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. At the plate, hands are quick (82 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Matthew is a prospect on the diamond and will get looks from the collegiate coaches, possibly as a two-way guy.

10/17/2018 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Mathew is a thin and lanky 2020 2-way prospect that worked hard during the Junior Fall Classic. At 1B, Mathew is on time with his prep step, he presents a low/early glove, and has good footwork of the bag. He has a clean exchange and shows range on both sides of the ball. He needs to continue to work on picking the ball and fielding he ball in front of his body. At the plate, Mathew start in an athletic stance and loads his hands back into the drive position. He shows some bat speed and the ability to drive the ball to the pull side. He needs to continue to have a middle approach at the plate, hunt fastballs early, and adjust with two strikes. Continuing to attack the inside part of the ball and creating backside rotation with his lower half will allow him to stay balanced throughout the swing. On the bump, Mathew gathers over the rubber, separates on time, and has a clean arm action. His lower half works well and he does a very good job holding runners. He has good run on his fastball and he has an 11-5 break on his curveball. Developing his changeup will elevate his game to the next level and help him work off his fastball. Mathew will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

03/25/2018 - National Tryout Plus - Mill Valley (San Francisco), CA Matthew is a talented RHP/1B prospect who has a solid build. On the mound, Matthew has a balanced, on-time delivery throwing from a 3/4 arm slot. He has a clean arm action and gets good extension with his arm. Matthew stays square to home plate with a controlled landing. He works downhill and rotates nicely with his hips. He commands his fastball with tail action at 78-81 MPH. Matthew also features a sharp breaking curveball and deceptive changeup with run movement. In the field, Matthew plays with effective pre-pitch actions and agile actions. He fields the ball athletically and shows a smooth backhand. Matthew throws with a long arm action from a low 3/4 arm slot. His throws are accurate with strength across the diamond. Offensively, Matthew has a tall setup with a centered balance. He has an on-time stride with good rhythm. Matthew has a direct swing path consistently landing the barrel to the baseball. He is a line drive type hitter who can drive the ball to the opposite field. Overall, Matthew is a versatile prospect who has skill on both sides of the ball.

10/04/2017 - Arizona Sophomore Fall Classic Matthew is a tall, projectable RHP/1B prospect who has a versatile skill set. He brings a positive energy to the field and is a great teammate. On the mound, Matthew stays composed and pitches aggressively. He throws from a 3/4 arm slot and mixes his pitches well. He stays directional to home plate and pitches downhill. He effectively finishes with his chest over his front knee. Matthew has effective tail action on his fastball, now topping out at 78mph. He works to keep the ball down in the zone and get GB outs. Offensively, this LHH has a tall, open stance with a centered balance. He has fluid rhythm to load and gets his hands into a strong launch position. Barrel is zipped through the zone with speed as he connects and makes consistent/hard contact. He battles at the plate (collecting 3 singles and 2 BB's at the event). At 1B, Matthew plays with active footwork and a quick first step getting a good jump on GB's hit to his right and left. He moves with agile actions and presents his glove as he fields the ball with a soft/quiet glove. He moves well around the 1B bag and adjusts his footwork to throws up and down the line. Overall, Matthew is a skilled 2-way player who plays the game with confidence. A 2020 grad, he has a very bright future ahead of him in the game.

09/03/2017 - College PREP - San Francisco, CA Matthew continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 77 mph. Delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. He shows good tempo through a strong balance point. Fastball showed a range of 74-77 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for pitch with arm side run. Off speed stuff show potential as being quality pitches as he continues to develop. Control is well above average as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are clean but needs to present more out front. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls but will benefit by playing through with his body. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. At the plate, he shows a tall setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he works to utilize his lower half more efficiently.

10/16/2016 - College PREP - Santa Rosa, CA Matthew is a strong, lean two-way prospect who is currently slightly more advanced as a position player. He shines at first with the ability to pick throws out of the dirt and good footwork and a quick release to help turn double plays. On the mound, he displays a compact motion with a smooth delivery that is repeatable and causes little stress on his arm. His has a free arm swing that leads to solid command and good movement on his pitches. Getting more lower half drive towards the plate will result in an uptick in velocity and stuff moving forward. At the plate, he is a strong contact hitter with line drive tendencies coming from a fast bat through the zone. He has fluid hips to clear his lower half and whip the bat through the zone, finishing with extension through contact. His defense at first is a real asset as he is aggressive to the ball with active feet and presents his hands to field. His exchange and release are quick and clean with an accurate arm to throw. We look forward to watching Matthew continue to progress on the field.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
