Matthew is a stocky, athletic 1B/RHP that will graduate in 2015. Currently, he projects best at 1B for the next level. Defensive abilities are well above average at 1B as he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver, displaying clean hands. He consistently showed the ability to pick balls out of the dirt, saving throws. For defensive grade to continue to improve, he needs to improve foot quickness and work on staying low through the fielding process. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program and work to get rid of the baseball quicker. At the plate, he shows a squared/balanced setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed and work through an aggressive/level swing path. He has strength in his swing and shows a feel for the barrel with the ball exploding off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he learns to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 68-71 mph with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. Changeup shows cutting action but slows arm speed, tipping off the pitch to hitters. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained. Matthew has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.
