Official Scouting Report

  • 1BPosition Projection

07/29/2014 - Under Armour Southwest Championships, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Matthew continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. He utilizes his feet well as he is aggressive in attacking ground balls, displaying clean hands. He displays proper footwork and is a quality receiver and consistently showed the ability to pick balls out of the dirt, saving throws. Throws are accurate with carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, he continues to shine through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, generating bat speed through an aggressive approach. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields and shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

01/26/2014 - College PREP - Kapolei (Honolulu), HI Matthew is a stocky, athletic 1B/RHP that will graduate in 2015. Currently, he projects best at 1B for the next level. Defensive abilities are well above average at 1B as he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver, displaying clean hands. He consistently showed the ability to pick balls out of the dirt, saving throws. For defensive grade to continue to improve, he needs to improve foot quickness and work on staying low through the fielding process. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program and work to get rid of the baseball quicker. At the plate, he shows a squared/balanced setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed and work through an aggressive/level swing path. He has strength in his swing and shows a feel for the barrel with the ball exploding off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he learns to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 68-71 mph with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. Changeup shows cutting action but slows arm speed, tipping off the pitch to hitters. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained. Matthew has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
