Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 2B/RHPPosition Projection

07/29/2015 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 Matthew continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now an above average runner at 7.20. At the plate, hitting grade has improved through a squared / athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Power numbers will continue to improve as he utilizes his lower half more aggressively. At the event, he had a great tournament going 4 for 10 with 2 2B and 6 RBI. At 2B, feet are active as he works around balls and plays through with his body. He moves well laterally, flashing range in the MIF. Hands are soft / sure but needs to present more out front to continue to improve defensive grade. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 77-78 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with good depth and sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with tailing action. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Control is outstanding as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he works hard and is very coachable.

03/22/2015 - College PREP - Brentwood (Long Island), NY Matthew is a wiry strong 2016 grad that projects as a RHP/SS. On the mound, he throws from a high 3/4 arm slot with smooth, clean arm action, pounding the zone with strikes. He throws a heavy ball, paired with the deception of hiding the ball - making it tough for the hitters to pick up. Pitching seems to come natural to this young player, especially with a deadly 3-pitch mix. At SS, he gets into a good ready position with smooth arm action from multiple slots and has a good feel for the game. At the plate, he is a patient hitter that hits with an open stance and active hands. He barrels up the ball, drilling 9/12 pitches thrown to him. Overall - Matthew is an intriguing young hurler/SS with good upside.

08/24/2014 - College PREP - Farmingville (Long Island), NY Matthew is a young, lean SS/RHP that will graduate in 2016. Defensive abilities are solid as he displays clean / smooth actions. Feet are active / aggressive as he attacks ground balls and plays through well with his body. Hands are soft / clean / sure as he presents well out front as he shows big play potential in the MIF. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he increases his foot quickness. Throws are accurate as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed to and through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with power numbers improving as he learns to use his lower half. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he works to stay inside the ball to utilize all fields and works to get stride foot down sooner to work on time. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 76-79 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with sinking action. Off speed pitches show as quality pitch that will get outs at the next level. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 2 years to further develop, Matthew has potential and will get looks from the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

11/09/2013 - Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend (Ages 14-18) Matthew does a great job of letting his entire body work well together during the swing. Matthew displays a very smooth swing throughout the entire swing and into his finish, he also does a great job of clearing his backside on a consistent basis. His front side tends to leak at times which causes him to dive into the outside pitch. He also needs to work on keeping his weight between his knees, this will improve his balance, and his consistency.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
