Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3BPosition Projection

07/07/2017 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition (Ages 12-14) Matthew continues to show steady progress in his baseball abilities. At 3B, he displays smooth actions. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls and squares up well with his body. Hands are clean but needs to present more out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be. With 4 years to further develop, Matthew has the makings of a special type player with time and room to progress his game.

06/04/2017 - Interactive Video Program - Albany, NY Matthew is a lean, athletic 3B/OF. Defensively at 3B, he fields GB's in a square fielding position. He comes up with a clean exchange and makes accurate throws to his target. In the OF, he takes athletic routes as he tracks down fly balls. He presents his hands out in front and has a quick transfer. With the bat, Matthew shows an athletic setup and fluid rhythm to load. He explodes his lower 1/2 through, swings on a direct path through the zone and sprays pitches to all parts of the field. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Infield
1. Be on time
2. Play through
3. Develop soft hands
Outfield
1. Work behind the fly ball
2. Lateral range
3. Arm strength (long toss)
Offense
1. Front foot timing
2. Improve bat speed
3. Use a middle of the field approach

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
