Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/LHPPosition Projection

07/18/2017 - College PREP - Sauget (St. Louis), IL Matthew is a lean, lanky LHP/1B who has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed is well above average as indicated by his 60 time of 7.03. At the plate is where he shows best, through a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He has strength in his swing and utilizes his lower half with baseball jumping off the bat when centered through a line drive approach. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Glove action is soft / sure but will benefit by presenting more out front. Feet are active as he attacks balls, playing through well. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. He shows good tempo through a strong balance point. Fastball showed a range of 75-78 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 1/7 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Matthew has a lot of potential with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
