01/13/2017 - Baseball Factory All-America Pre-Season Rookie Tournament Matthew is a talented young 2020 SS with a high baseball IQ. On defense, Matthew has active pre-pitch movement and creates good angles around the ball. He gets into a square position and presents his hands out front to field the ball. He shows a quick exchange and gains momentum well on his throws which allows them to remain accurate to his target. As a hitter, Matthew sets up in an open stance and takes a square stride to the ball. He gets into his load and comes through the zone well with his lower half. He takes a direct swing path staying inside he ball and hits line drives to all fields. Matthew hustles around the field, and impressed the coaching staff with his knowledge of the game.

07/29/2016 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 Matthew continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a tremendous future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a well above average runner at 7.10. At SS, defensive abilities are now well above average as he displays smooth/fluid actions. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls and squares up well with his body. Hands are clean as he presents on time and out front. He shows off his athletic ability on his feeds of the double play. Hands/feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy on his throws. At the plate, hitting potential has improved through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap to gap pop. At the event, he was 4 for 7 with a 2B. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be. With 4 years to further develop, Matthew has the makings of a special type player as he continues to progress his game.

08/18/2015 - Interactive Video Program - Trenton, NJ Matthew is a talented 2-way player (SS/OF) who has an athletic build. At the plate, this switch hitter currently shows more natural from the right side. He works back into a strong loaded position, waits for his pitch and whips the barrel on a level path. He connects with strength and drives the middle of the field. At SS, Matthew has active prep working well on the balls of his feet. He works smoothly around the GB into a square/athletic fielding position. He gathers smoothly and has a clean exchange to throw. In the OF, Shaw takes aggressive routes to track down fly-balls to his right and left. He secures the ball, has a quick exchange and makes accurate throws into his target as he works to stay on top of the ball. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Offense
1. Extension through contact
2. More lower 1/2 drive
3. Contact points
Infield
1. Play through the GB
2. DP turns

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
