Official Scouting Report

  • RHP/3BPosition Projection

01/18/2019 - 2019 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Matthew is a talented 2-way player who continues to progress on the diamond. On the mound, this righty fills up the zone and throws strikes consistently, challenging hitters to swing the bat. He maintains quick tempo and works ahead in the count. FB now tops out at 83 mph while showing slight tail. Breaking ball has 10/4 shape with good action. Changeup is thrown with FB arm speed helping to create deception, complimenting his FB well. At 3B, he maintains quick/active footwork and moves well right to left. Hands are presented out in front as he tracks the GB into his mitt, gathers well and makes accurate throws to his target. With the bat, Matthew displays an open and balanced setup as he remains relaxed and patient. He has a good eye for the zone, proven by drawing 4 walks at the event. Swing is level and he hits line-drives consistently. Only a 2021 grad - this 2-way prospect has a ton of upside and will only continue to develop.

07/18/2018 - Under Armour Southwest Championships 16U, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Matthew is a thick, athletic RHP/3B who has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 60 time of 7.27. At 3B, defensive abilities are outstanding as he displays smooth / clean actions. Feet are active and he displays proper footwork and plays through balls with his body. Glove action is soft /sure and presents well out front. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground. At the plate, he continues to shine through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball and shows a feel for the barrel, flashing gap-to-gap pop. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. At the event, he was 4 for 10. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 79-82 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late, sharp break. He slows arm speed on his changeup, tipping off pitch to hitters. Control is outstanding as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 3 years to further develop, Matthew has the makings of a special type player and will get looks from the collegiate coaches as he continues to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
