Official Scouting Report

  • 2B/3BPosition Projection

07/30/2018 - College PREP - York, PA Matthew is a versatile, athletic 2019 prospect who shows impressive tools all over the field. He can really hit with both the ability to make consistent contact and flash power to all fields. He shows a middle approach, staying back on the ball and using his level swing path to cover the whole strike zone. He uses his lower half to generate leverage and lift the ball for gap power. At second, he displays efficient footwork to work around the ball and gain momentum to his target. He has quick hands and a clean exchange to throw to make accurate DP feeds and turns and good throws. At the hot corner, he goes to the backhand well and plays through to work towards his target. A long toss program will increase arm strength and allow him to stay on the left side of the infield.

12/27/2017 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Matthew is a coachable 2B/RHP prospect who made adjustments well during his time at the Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City. In the field, Matthew works around the ball and fields out in front with soft hands. He has a quick, clean exchange and gains momentum well on his throws, keeping them accurate and on-line to his target. Matthew can improve defensively by getting into a more atheltic fielding position. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an open stance and takes a short stride. He gets into his load and leads well with his lower half. He takes a short swing with fast bat speed which leads to hard contact and line drives. Matthew can improve as a hitter by working a smoother rhythm into his load. On the mound, Matthew works quickly and shows good composure. He has a two pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 73mph with cutting action. Breaking ball sits from 60-65mph with 10-4 break. Matthew can improve as a pitcher by loosening his arm action and by extending through on his release. Overall, Matthew is a solid prospect who has the potential to further develop his skills on the field.

08/27/2017 - College PREP - Wilmington, DE Matthew is a tall, athletic, 2-way player who plays 2nd base and RHP. Defensively, Matthew has fluid/active footwork, soft hands, and he fields in a low/athletic position. He makes plays smoothly, his exchange is quick, and he throws with a loose arm action to his target. Improved range and added arm strength will help defense improve. On the mound, Matthew has a long/loose arm action, good direction, and proper extension on his pitches. He keeps his eyes on target, finishes in an athletic position, and competes in the zone with his pitches. Matthew can get better on the mound with a more square landing, tighter front side, and added arm strength. Offensively, Matthew has a tall/athletic set-up, a square stride, and quiet eyes. He has a direct barrel to the ball, makes square contact, and flashes a line drive approach. Hitting can spike with a looser grip, added aggressiveness, and better barrel accuracy.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
