05/15/2016 - College PREP - Glen Allen (Richmond), VA Matthew continues to show a tremendous future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 69 time to date, now an outstanding runner at 6.97. In the OF, defensive abilities have improved, displaying smooth / fluid actions. In the OF, he utilizes his quick feet well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls well. He works to get behind balls and plays through with momentum to his target. Reads off the bat are a plus and covers a lot of ground, displaying range. Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy on his throws, displaying an outstanding arm. At the plate, hitting abilities are now outstanding through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, generating bat speed to and through a level swing path, creating extension. He works inside the ball, utilizing all fields as he shows a feel for the barrel with baseball exploding off the bat when centered, displaying gap to gap pop. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 79-83 mph with arm side run. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with late break. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches at the next level. Control is outstanding as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches.

09/20/2015 - College PREP - Woodbridge (DC), VA Matthew continues to shine on the diamond. This athletic 2-way player can make things happen. Offensively, this righty stands in with an athletic/balanced setup with quiet/simple actions. Hands are quick with plus bat speed as he connects with pop, driving the ball to all parts of the field. In the OF, Matthew hustles and works into position behind the fly-ball. He gathers well, has a smooth transfer and makes strong/accurate throws into his target. On the bump, this RHP gets strong glove side lead and stays directional toward the dish. He commands his FB well hitting his spots and work it in and out. Curveball has 10/4 shape with sharp action and the ability to throw it for strikes in any count. Changeup shows to be his best off-speed pitch as he throws it with FB arm speed - showing late run which will get in on the RHH's. Whitely is a well-rounded athlete who will make an impact in a variety of ways on the diamond.

05/03/2015 - College PREP - Glen Allen (Richmond), VA Matthew is a broad OF/RHP that will graduate in 2017 with a promising future on the diamond. Currently, he projects best in the OF for the next level but has an upside on the mound. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 7.10 60 time. In the OF, defensive grades are outstanding as he displays smooth / fluid actions. He utilizes his feet well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He works to get behind balls and plays through with momentum to his target. Throws are accurate with life / carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, he continues to shine, displaying well above average hitting / power potential through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, generating bat speed and work through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing and shows a feel for the barrel with baseball exploding off the bat when centered, as he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 77-79 mph with late life. Breaking ball displays 1/7 shape with late / sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup showing a feel for with arm side run. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches, locating to both sides of the plate. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 2 years to further develop, Matthew has the makings of a special type player and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities, possibly as a two-way guy.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
