Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/CPosition Projection

07/10/2015 - California Select Training & Competition - Session 1 Matthew showed as a RHP/C at the event with a promising future on the diamond at both positions. At the plate he has improved hitting abilities through an athletic setup. He works through a strong lower half and has swing in his swing with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Hands are loose and work inside the ball, utilizing all fields, displaying gap to gap pop. At the event, he was 4 for 9 with a 2B. Behind the plate, pop times showed in the low 2.5 range with pop times continuing to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking show as playable tools that will play well at the next level as he continues to improve. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 67-68 mph with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He throws a knuckleball that displays good downward / sinking action. Stock to the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength, works to throw more strikes and develops better off speed pitch. Mental makeup is a plus as he shows good leadership behind the plate, is very coachable, and works hard to be the best player he can be.

05/03/2015 - Interactive Video Program - Phoenix, AZ Matthew is a young (2021 grad) 2-way player RHP/C who has skills. On the mound, this righty has an effective 3-pitch mix coming from a high 3/4 arm slot and free/clean arm action. He works to a tall balance point, maintains level shoulders and works in-line toward the dish. He keeps his pitches down in the zone and will get a lot of GB outs. FB ranges from 70-71 mph while showing sink & tail. Curveball has 12/6 shape with late break. Behind the plate, Matthew sits in well with athletic actions and flexion. He sticks pitches in the zone, framing well. Exchange is clean as he gains ground toward his target at 2B (pop times at 2.50). With the bat, this RHH shows a square setup with good balance. He whips the barrel through the zone, connecting consistently and driving the ball to all parts of the field. The ball jumps off of his barrel when centered as he connects with strength. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Pitching
1. Develop a changeup
2. Arm strength (long toss)
3. Finish with extension
Catching
1. Transfer/exchange
2. Blocking
Offense
1. Contact points
2. Balance throughout swing

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
