Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHPPosition Projection

12/27/2011 - Pirate City Christmas Camp and Tournament - Session 2 Michael threw well on the mound during his time in Pirate City.  He has good balance, a high leg kick, and a short arm action.  His mechanics are solid, he has a good game plan, and he mixes his patches well.  Offensively, Michael had good balance, he makes solid contact, and he uses all fields.

11/19/2011 - Accelerated Hitting Weekend Michael has a very good stride and load, and good hand and bat placement in the stride and load. He has very good use of lower half and using the hips to lead his swing, which causes the upper body and lower body to stay connected during the swing. Michael has the tendency to bar his front arm in the load, which causes him to become armsy and reach for the baseball causing him to become disconnected and lose power in the swing. But Michael does a very good job of fixing the swing at contact and lets his body become strong at contact, but he is not consistent with this, and fixing it will come with repetition. Michael has the tendency to let his upper body be tall at contact, which could lead to being off balance during contact; he needs to remember to have his chest back during contact.

10/02/2011 - College PREP - Trenton, NJ Michael is a tall, athletic RHP / Catcher who will graduate in 2012. On the mound, Michael has a long / loose arm action, a tall balance point, and on-time separation. He has a fluid delivery, he works in good rhythm, and he keeps his shoulders level. Michael has good direction toward home and he competes in the zone with all of his pitches. More lower half and improved extension can help mound effectiveness improve. Behind the plate, Michael has a quiet set-up, he holds a low target, and he catches in a square position. He has playable hands and feet, his exchange is clean, and he throws with accuracy and average strength to his target. Catching skills can improve if Michael can quicken his actions, show his target sooner, and stay low when blocking. At the plate, Michael has a tall / open stance, a short / square stride, and good balance. He is a contact hitter who puts the ball in play and who makes good use of his lower 1/2. If Michael can loosen his grip, and throw his hands more directly to the ball, we could see a spike in offensive numbers.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
