Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

12/20/2013 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City Mannix showed as a 3B/RHP at Pirate City and he displayed solid abilities. At 3B, feet are active as he displays proper footwork in working to square balls up, displaying clean hands as he makes the routine plays. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he learns to attack balls more and play through while presenting hands more out front. His throws are accurate and his arm works well at his position, but he will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, Mike shows a squared setup with rhythm. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing and shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. At the event, he had 3 BB and 2 HBP as he is patient and has a solid eye at the plate. He showed good awareness of the strike zone and we feel that his power potential will be a big strength for him moving forward. On the mound, Mannix showed a solid curve ball, and the ability to work both sides of the plate. Developing a change up and finishing with better direction while keeping the ball down in the zone will help his pitching scores improve. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable.

07/12/2013 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition - Session 1 Mike is a RHP/3B that will graduate in 2015. He has improved across the board since his initial tryout earlier this year. Currently, he projects slightly better on the mound for the next level but his strength with the bat makes him a possible two way player at the next level. On the mound, his delivery is sound, repeatable, allowing his loose / quick arm action to work well to the plate. He shows an aggressive tempo with fastball showing a range of 80-82 mph on a downhill plane. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with tight spin and sharp breaking action. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a plus feel for and needs to throw it more in games. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches, locating to both sides of the plate. At 3B, feet are active as he works to square balls up, displaying clean hands. He needs to play through balls more while presenting hands more out front to continue to improve defensive grade. At the plate, Mannix shows a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing with baseball exploding off the bat when centered. Power numbers, though above average now, will continue to increase as he learns to use his lower half more. He is an aggressive base runner, displaying plus instincts. Mental makeup is a plus as he is a hard worker with a great attitude. With 2 years to further develop, Mike has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches over the next couple of years. He is one to watch.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
