Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/3BPosition Projection

01/15/2016 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Rarely have we seen players make the kind of velocity jumps that Michael has in the last few months. The athletic 2-way player has gone from 82 mph to 89 mph on the mound in a matter of months and has made our scouts take notice of his high upside as a pitcher. His arm is clean and accelerates well through release, giving his upper 80s fastball excellent life. Michael pounds the bottom of the strike zone and has a breaking ball that flashes swing-and-miss potential. As a position player, he has an intriguing set of tools as a 6.6 runner with the ability to impact the baseball (94 mph exit velo). We don't expect Slaten to stay under-the-radar much longer as he had a breakout event in Arizona and still has much more potential.

12/20/2015 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 1 Michael is a special player, that displayed his stand-out tools at the Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City. His foot speed is still evident as he ran another 6.8 sixty, just a month since his first outing with Baseball Factory. Defensively, his abilities at 3B are tremendous, showing smooth / fluid actions. He moves well laterally, displaying range and works through a low to high approach. Hands & feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with life & accuracy across the diamond. At the plate, he continues to shine, displaying outstanding hitting abilities with tremendous power potential. His hands are quick, generating bat speed as he works to stay inside the ball, and he utilizes all fields. On the mound, he has big upside with a live arm and tons of mound presence. Fastball showed a range of 82-88 mph with an outstanding slider that will get outs at the next level. Control is a plus as he attacks hitters, throwing strikes with all his pitches. Mental makeup is also a plus, with a strong work ethic, and coachable attitude. Overall - Michael has a chance to get looks from the top collegiate coaches and pro scouts, possibly as a two-way player.

11/22/2015 - College PREP - Corpus Christi, TX Michael is an interesting young two-way prospect who plays 3B and pitches. He is an athletic guy who swings the bat with authority. He has a connected swing with a short stroke that results in consistent, loud contact. He drives the ball into both gaps and stands in very well. As a defender he has good range thanks to a quick first step (also ran a 6.84 in the 60) and shows soft hands. He has a strong arm with carry to his throws across the diamond. That arm strength translates into low 80s velocity to his FB on the mound. He has a sharp breaking ball with 10-4 shape that acts as his out-pitch. He complements the FB and SL with a developing change. Overall, this is a talented guy with a very high ceiling. Athletes who can swing the bat are always in demand.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
